3 out of 5 stars Really good but not COD 4   November 13, 2008

I have had it for 3 days and having fun. I need to do more exploring on it but here is my 3 day opinion. Graphics are great. Functionality is great. I like getting back to WWII. It is dark and I need to turn all the lights off in the room to see clearly on all the maps. I like "free-for-all". Some of the maps have you spawn in areas you have a 50% chance of dieing immediately. This is surprising considering the size of the maps. "Free for all" seems to be lacking on maps which only has 4. I imagine it is intentionally set up this way so they can charge us down the road for additions. If they start trying to duke us for extra cash I will be extremely ticked and sell the game on principle. They have my $60 bucks and I am glad I have the game but they need to do some updates at no charge or this will get old really quick. Again...free-for-all is only one aspect of this game so if you are into other styles of play, you may be very pleased.

5 out of 5 stars A Trip Through The Trees... Just Before The Ambush   November 13, 2008

Welcome to World War 2. No, you will not be experiencing D-Day for the hundreth time, nor will you be tackling German after German (Atleast, Not ALL the Time). This time, your going to be experiencing WW2 from the Pacific Front, with the Japanese. Like the back of the game says, This truly was a War I have never experienced before. But Dont be fooled, this isn't the Call of Duty we knew before COD 4. This is a much grittier, and much more traumatic (and Dramatic) experience.

This was the first COD game that actually felt like an M rated title to me. This War wasn't truly about fighting for Valor, Heroics, or other Stereotypical means. This was a battle to survive...
The game opens with a very well executed (No pun intended) Torture Scene.
You then set foot out onto the beach and boy is it pretty. The Water recieved a massive update. The moonlight cascades off of the nearby reef so well. The fire has also recieve some tune-ups, nothing major, but an improvement nonetheless.

There is actually 2 stories in World At War:
The story of the American Marine Pvt. Miller in the Pacific Front, and the story of Pvt. Demitri Palinski of the Soviet Union, as they desperately push to Berlin towards the end of the war. Both offer a very Nice contrast from each other, so no setting gets Too Stale.

The AI is top-notch. The Japanese will perform Bonzai Rushes, Ambushes, and Do Anything to try and kill you. The Enemys are so ruthless, that they never make you regret setting them ablaze with A Molotov Cocktail or Splattering there face on the sidewalk while they lying defenseless at your feet.

Theres some new weapons this time around. Whether it be a Double Barrel Shotgun, or a Flamethrower, they all look, work, and sound very nice. They also added Limb Dismemberment. Shoot a man at close range with a high-caliber rifle, and his arm will soar through the air like a bald eagle as he falls to the ground in pain.

As fun as the game is, there is a few flaws. None of the are Game-Breaking, but they certainly do Hinder the experience. Well as it turns out, if your hiding behind cover that a friendly NPC wants, you can become stuck (and immobile) inside of him. This has only happened once, whether it be a freak incident or not, It really made it seem Un-polished.
Some Frame-rate choppieness occurs here and there, but thats a minor gripe. The Single Player is also pretty short, but that means you can jump straight into the online sooner. But there is one last gripe. The AI is good, but it has the tendency to lock onto only one person. Not gamebreaking, but it can shatter the realism quite to a degree.

Online is as good as ever, with the addition of a Zombie-Nazi Kill-a-thon and 4 Player Co-op Single Player.

So in conclusion, buy World at War. It uses the COD 4 engine, but it also expands on it. Like I stated before, Take a trip through the trees.. Just watch out for the ambush.

4 out of 5 stars Treyarch made up for CoD3   November 13, 2008

So you hate WWII shooters...cool and you may pass on CoD5 because that's what it is...fine.

Worse...Treyarch is doing it.

Well, let me tell you, they didn't do a bad job...this game makes up for that hideous Medal of Honor Airborne and Call of Duty 3 that came out in recent years.

I am going to gloss over most of it just to say that now instead of killing Nazis the whole game, the Japanese get their turn (prediction: the Italians are next!).

Basically, this game is CoD 4 reskinned...the controls are not different than before and even mutliplayer is still what it was before with a few added perks. Also if you completed the game or had some frineds that completed the game, give zombie mode a try...it's fast and frenetic.

I am impressed that the AI is more agressive and will ambush you if you aren't careful, however it's still scripted.

The voice acting is great also with Keifer Sutherland and Gary Oldman providing voices.

Also having vehicles to drive in on certain areas really helped a lot.

My only comlaint so far is some of mapping is not great...also, maybe it's me and GoW got me spoiled, but shooters should really start seriously adding cover systems in their games...at least for the realism. I am one of the few that enjoyed BiA and one of the reasons why was because of the cover system...the AI was poor at aiming but still it felt 'realistic'.

If you are on the fence at least give it a try, if you liked 4 then this will be a no brainer.....

on a scale from 1 to 5 - a 4 (get with the times guys....put a cover system in the game!)

5 out of 5 stars Credit where it is due   November 13, 2008

My friends and I had some hands-on time with the new COD last night. First impressions are good. It did take some getting used to. There are no more laser sights and it is a bit darker than before, which can make it tough to spot and kill enemies. Overall it just seems less polished and precise than COD4. It is very solid, but will probably not blow people away the way COD4 did. Is it the best game I've ever played? No. But it still belongs right up there with the best in my collection.

That being said, here is why everyone should get it right away:

The multiplayer rocks.

I know that is where I spent most of my time in COD4. For everyone who complains, "Not another WWII game!", the story and setting don't really matter once you get into the online play.

The maps are great and seem well thought out. There is a good deal of variety and you never seem to find yourself too far from the action,

There are tanks! There are not jeeps and motorcycles everywhere to cause every idiot to go zipping around the boards like hummingbirds on crack, just a well-placed tank here and there to add some spice to the open areas.

You can tell your party members apart from the crowd! When we played, I noticed that the people in your party show up as a different color (blue) than everyone else. This makes it easy to tell exactly where they are and actually join up with them. It made it much more enjoyable to be able to get in on the action and actually play with my friends instead of just talking to them while I went off on my own. Gone are the days of, "Where are you?" "I am over by that abandoned building" "Which one?" " The one with the caved in roof" " You mean the factory?" "I think it is a warehouse" "By the machine gun?" "Never mind, I just got killed."

Add that to the new ability for eight person private chat, and you will actually be able to play together with your friends without ever hearing another annoying 12 year old!

Co-op campaign seems awesome. You can actually play through the story mode online as a four person squad instead of just by yourself. You can even set it to be competitive and keep track of each player's stats so you can compare kills and such. You can also use some cheat cards you find during the game to keep it interesting. There are even multiplayer achievements.

I haven't unlocked the flame-thrower yet, so we'll see if it is as awesome as it sounds.

If you have gotten through this whole review without ordering the game, here is one more thing for you to wrap your mind around: ZOMBIE NAZIS

Google it and see for yourself!

That is all.

Yup i said it! Forget Fable 2, GOW 2, and Fallout 3 are over-rated! Grpahic and story mode it is the best of the year! Great Job Guys! Thanks for not over-hyping a game and falling short like all the others this year!!
