Truely an epic game November 13, 2008 Kibo (San Jose, CA United States) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
In addition to the improved graphics/contrast of the Gears world, the biggest plus for me is the ability to play again real big monsters. In Gears 1, you only get a slight glimpse of the Brumak but in 2, you actually get to fight it along with a bunch of other amazingly huge monsters.
Compared to Gears 1, Gears 2 is a little bit slower as there are more co-op puzzles (coordination between 2 characters to pass through certain areas in campaign mode). The selection of weapons increased and it's been made more difficult in the fights because the clip of the weapons are smaller (Lancer). The audio is just superb, especially if you have a 5.1 system set up for it.
I have yet to really try the multiplayer, but the campaign itself was worth the price. Horde is definitely fun too with 50 waves of enemies. This game is more about strategy and tactics than just shooting and rushing. Teamwork is key, which is perfect for the Xbox 360 live.
Gears 2 November 12, 2008 M. Randall (Allen Park, MI) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Gears of War 2 is another hit for Epic but in a lot of ways the game seems to fall short of the original Gears from 2006. The enemies seem more predictable in my opinion and the drones especially, are not a resourceful and cunning as their AI led you to believe in part 1. As for the story, pretty standard and nothing that new really. The co-op is fun as usual as is the multiplayer. A new mode called horde allows you and 4 buddies to take on up to 50 waves of increasingly hard enemies. All in all, a worthy sequel and seems like the game could have been polished a little bit more.
Jerry Bruckheimer Would Be Proud! November 12, 2008 Christopher Deweese (USA) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
Like most Jerry Bruckheimer movies, Gears of War 2 takes what was good from previous efforts and mixes them all together. It also builds upon an already firm foundation of great gun play, cut scenes, and graphics. The criticism I have for Gears 2 is that not much in the game is all that original. I don't want to spoil things for those who haven't played it yet, but suffice it to say most of what's in Gears 2 has been done before (ala Jerry Bruckheimer).
Don't get me wrong. Gears 2 is stunning from beginning to end. The graphics continue to be the best I've seen on a console, bar none. Sound design and camera work are great. The array of weapons is improved with the good stuff left alone. You get to ride more "vehicles" than in the previous game. The story is intriguing, and it fleshes out more details about each character (especially Dom). It's an all around treat.
Unfortunately, a lot of the levels have been done before in games like Halo 3, Resistance: Fall of Man, and other countless shooters. Is it that developers are running out of ideas or is it that there just aren't that many arenas to put a shooter in? I don't know, but if it weren't for the great story telling and game mechanics, Gears 2 could have been a big dud.
Luckily for us, Gears 2 is awesome. I finished the single player campaign in about 4 days and loved every minute of it. The story, characters, graphics, and gun play are top notch (albeit not totally original).
Great Game, but doesn't live up to the Hype November 12, 2008 Michael G. Mcclain (Johnson City, TN United States) 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
Having played through Gears 1 multiple times and loving it, I was exstatic about Gears 2 and eagerly checked the mail every day for my preorder. When it finally arrived, I turned on the 100" screen/projector system and was prepared to be knocked over....I wasn't. Now, the graphics are great, but not a huge step up from the original Gears which is what I was expecting. I found the visuals choppy at times and rather CG vs. realistic. A good example is when you cut the arteries of the worm heart and blood flows out. The blood splatter on the chase camera is a nice touch, but nothing new.
Multiplayer takes around 5 minutes to find a match, and then the lag can be a nightmare. I'm hard wired into my internet, so maybe it was the hosts connection, but it's not fun to play a laggy multiplayer where close quarters battles are abundant.
I'll still give it 4 stars, but I'm a fairly disappointed Gears fan. I guess the saying "Don't believe the hype" is fitting here. Had I not read previews and followed the release info, I may be writing a totally different review. Still a great game, just not groundbreaking.
Definately a renter. November 12, 2008 P. Henry (South Lake Tahoe, CA) 7 out of 13 found this review helpful
I played the campaign through once and it's okay. There are alot of annoying parts where you control vehicles that are impossible to control (i.e. tank that only moves the direction the turret is aimed). Overall, it's pretty much the same as the first Gears. It has amazing graphics, and it's a pretty good 3rd person shooter when you're actually on foot. I won't name any other games here, but there are many other 3rd person shooters that are much better than this one. I think that Cliff Bl...sky (I wont even try to spell that one) gets paid way too much for talking up this mediocre game and creating so much hype for it. This game is going back tomorrow. I'm glad I rented it.
