Loses a star for bad multiplayer November 13, 2008 H. Crosland (Maryland) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Gears of War 2
If it ain't broke don't fix it....GoW 2 is out and so far I am very very excited.
The game starts off with about as much bang as a sci fi action movie should and takes you thru the paces. It picks up where the first one leaves off and has a bit more of a fleshed out storyline. And if you have been paying attention with some of the reviews, the story actually does make you feel more of a dire urgency to play this thru and save Sera
The new characters are cool and I got a bit attached to one and when it was their time it was a "Awww dang ..." kind of moment...on the other hand there was the return of a few characters that really made me feel that this game was done some justice.
Quite frankly, there wasn't too too much added into the game, but there are few standouts.
- If you thought the 1st one looked good, then this one surpasses that one....some spots do experience a bit of a drop in framerate but you will be so busy killing the Hordes, you may not have time to notice.
- A few new weapons are in the game, I won't spoil it too much or say beyond what you may already know...but I will say that the mortar attack is really of the chainz.
- The Brumak....nuff said
- The cover system is not as bad as the first one but sometimes can be a bit funky in some spots
_ Newer vehicle modes gives this game more variety also
A few lowlights
- right now, MP playing is still a bit laggy and glitchy...hopefully this will be patched pretty soon
- Dialogue is still cheesy at best
One thing I did enjoy about the multiplayer is for one....there are 5 downloadable maps right off the bat. The practice mode is cool too....you can even set up a room with yourself and some bots so you can try to suck much less against the pros. The new modea rae a blast such as Annex almost a throwback to BF 1942 and then there is Horde mode....when it works...
But between this and Call of Duty 5....you will have your hands full
scale of 1 to 5 - 4 (until they get the MP patched!)
Deflated fun. November 13, 2008 Marcus Fenix 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
*** Spoilers ***
Pros:
- The best graphics on any platform, by far. Amazing radiosity lighting, ultra sharp normal maps and textures, and overall fantastic design.
- New weapons, new characters and an overall better campaign than the first Gears.
- Human co-op is real fun.
- Little bits of details like tracking achievements and progress.
- Multiplayer incorporates bots, which is a cool addition, in case you can't find a good match to play.
Cons (the bulk of the game):
Campaign:
- All new characters die. All of 'em. Very underwhelming.
- AI co-op is WORSE than gears 1. They actually don't do anything.
- Story is still very convoluted and incomplete with some ultra cheesy moments that ruin the deep and darker approach gears 2 took this time around (e.g. falling off a 500ft waterfall without dying, or riding on reavers in the most uber-cheap fast-pace on accelerated motion).
- Very underwhelming ending.
Multiplayer:
- Gears 2 MP matchmaking is horridly broken; takes forever to start a game many times. A game breaker.
- Gears 2 MP has the same terrible lag, if not worse than Gears 1. A game breaker.
- Gears 2 MP more than occasionally randomizes you with overseas players forcing you into a dysfunctional lag gameplay. A game breaker.
- Gears 2 MP does NOT allow you to choose the gametype or map you prefer to play. A game breaker.
- Gears 2 MP has too many glitches to bother going through, when you're not host (e.g. shotty hip-shot), or even being host (e.g. cheating; using a boomshot with a boomshield). A game breaker.
- Gears 2 MP incorporates a visual ranking system that's zero-rewarding non-fun that will even punish a player, which makes it completely enraging in the light of the garbage lag.
excellent co-op November 13, 2008 joey fiasco (kzoo) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
i haven't played GOW1 or this one much online but the co-op is a lot of fun. it is an excellent game if its just you and a friend that want to play a fun co-op game. graphics are amazing and i think all the vehicles and what not were a nice and fun touch to the game. like **spoiler alert** hijacking a brumak, how could you not enjoy that? the gameplay is a lot longer then the first one and definately went more into detail about the whole war. didn't go into all the detail tho looks like there saving some for the next one tho
Stunning - even better graphics than the original! November 13, 2008 Mr W (Manchester, England) 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
This has got to be a superb game, & yes I know it's similar to the original, but the first GoW rocked. This has more weapons and different maps and some great new features, and I've only played on it for one day but I already think it's as addictive as the first!
Brilliant stuff & will be taking too much of my time for the foreseeable. Buy it if you liked the first one.
Nothing more than a GOW expansion pack. November 13, 2008 Sweden Is God 13 out of 22 found this review helpful
As many have already said, this game is a great game, but it is almost entirely a complete copy of Gears of War with new story(very little, just as in part one) and new levels. If you played Gears one, then you played this game.
Do you all remember the big stink that was made over Halo 2 because it did nothing to expand the first game in the franchise? Well, I think we're there again with this game. That's not to say it's not a great game, but a sequel generally includes expanded and newer features. There is almost nothing new here. You still romp around with your teammates ducking behind barriers, taking potshots at baddies, tossing the eventual nade and taking down a huge boss at some point in the affair. The one major thing they changed is the lack of real boss-like enemies in the first game. This game adds a few more enemies that rival the size of an apartment building, but beyond that, I can't think of anything more of value to make this "Gears of War 2." As far as the story as concerned, its hardly worthwhile. GOW story was just your usual end of the world fair and this game is simply the linear continuation of the last chapter in the first one. They easily could have made this the last 2 chapters in GOW instead of making you pay $60 more for it.
If you loved the first game then you will undoubtably fall all over this one. I know I did way back when. Years later now, after having played the sequel and replaying the first one a few times, I think my initial reaction was a little exagerated. I'd easily give the first game 4 stars, but this one hardly deserves that. It was supposed to expand the series, not keep it in limbo.
