Feels unfinished (other than graphics and sound) March 1, 2009 ManchesterUnited08 (Terre Haute, IN) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
AOE3 provides some breathtaking graphics for a RTS game. The home city concept is a nice twist, but not really a game changer. The overall game mechanics are nice, and the first few games are entertaining. I especially like that villagers don't have to manually deliver resources to a town center or warehouse.
Now for a list of the bad:
1. The AI seems to be hit-or-miss. Sometimes AI will generally feel something like a human player. Other times, it's completely senseless. For example, several times I've noticed an AI ally deploy troops to an enemy island. They'll attack the immediate units/building then just sit there for the rest of the game. And this is when the AI is on expert.
2. The balance between ships and land units seems off to me. I often see large powerful fleets decimated by a small group of field guns or other artillery.
3. The game options are lacking. You can only have a max of two teams. There's not really any in-game diplomacy. There's just not much you can do to customize in a skirmish game.
Overall the game is fun, but the lack of customization options leads to little replay value. And other than current gen graphics and sound, there's not much to find here you can't get elsewhere.
good game February 18, 2009 Rodney Corbett Fun game for one or on the local network. On line sucks. When i try to get a same level game on line i can tell the compation is not at my level. They are way above my level even though the system selected them as being at my biginner level.
The New World February 16, 2009 C. E. Hetzler (Hudson, MA) Excellent graphics right down to the exploding structures, falling leaves and bored soldiers. You do not have to spend as much time micromanaging your economy as in previous versions. The emphasis here is on combat and exploration.
I found the maps claustrophobic compared to the gigantic maps in Age of Empires II. It takes some getting used to, but once you do Age of Empires III is very bit as intense as the earlier versions.
If you are new to Age of Empires, you will probably find it tough going at first. There is no learning campaign as in previous versions. The tutorial is very limited in scope. However, there is a "sandbox" setting and a handicapping system that lets you experiment in relative safety until you know your way around. The early campaign scenerios are fairly easy to get through. Expect some frustration at first until you learn how to co-ordinate your efforts.
If you enjoy a challenging strategy game with a little history lesson thrown in, you will enjoy this game. Age of Empires III does a good job recreating the feel of the time period.
If you have Windows Vista, expect some installation problems. Download and install patches manually rather than relying on the in-game updater.
Too much movie. January 27, 2009 K. Sampson (Cumberland, ME USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Having played Age of Mythology (Titans Expansion) I was expecting more dynamic interaction. This has more movie time between action chapters that slow down the play, and reduce the openness of play. You are locked into very specific actions and not many opportunities to be creative.
A new take on an old classic January 18, 2009 J. Owens (Maryville, TN USA) As others have stated, this game does little more than put make-up and new clothes on the games' old features. I find the new system of the "home city" rather annoying, but as a fan I've decided to put up with it and call it part of the experience.
I find the game's most refreshing characteristics are the escape from the same old civilizations, and the ability to incorporate pirates and other mercenaries in your development and tactics.
Keep it up, Microsoft. Maybe even add some more expansions...such as one to include different central- and south-african civilizations, even middle-eastern (were any of those available in AoE 2? I thought I remembered the Egyptians...)
