5 out of 5 stars Arcade Paced Zombie Action Horror Awesomeness!!   November 19, 2008

Bottom line this game is an over the top, arcade paced, survival horror action game that rocks! Just make sure you always carry a shotgun. It's easier to take out more zombies with the shotgun. Especially when you have zombie barf on you and you can't see anything.

3 out of 5 stars Great rental, wouldn't buy for $60   November 19, 2008

The raving about this game has been directed at the AI director, who alternates the amount of zombies in a level based upon several factors (ie. how well you're doing, the previous setting, etc.). The reasoning behind this is so that you'll never face the same amount of zombies in one hallway as you would the second play through. Since there's only 20 levels, or four main storyboards composed of five levels each, most of them fairly short (depending upon skill level, you can either breeze through each level in 6-8 minutes or torture yourself). There are no save points throughout the level. You die once, you're back at the start.

The problem I found with the game is that there's no point in having an AI director if you're just going to have the equivalent of a rail shooter environment instead of a sandbox environment. You start at point A, you need to make it to the safe house at point B. This is not an open environment for you to scout out the terrain and choose the best available option to get there, which would be immensely more entertaining with the AI director in my opinion. There's a predetermined path you must take and it does not change. When you play a level one time you know the exact way to go the second time, the third time, the fiftieth time, etc. It also detracts from the reality of the game (or as real as a fictional zombie game can be). There would be no cars magically arranged in a way you couldn't get around. Police tape wouldn't be a way of stopping you from an easier path. This is especially frustrating considering there's only 20 levels.

Despite the repetitive nature, there are a lot of positives to this game. The graphics are crisp, the controller fairly simple to understand quickly and it's smooth flowing and responsive. The aiming system is spot on, headshots register as headshots and each gun has relative firepower compared to it's real life counterpart. The lighting is perfect. Your flashlight allows you to see what you need to see whether you're at a distance or up close. The sounds are eerie, especially when you know you're near a Witch but can't quite see her.

And that's another point, the special zombies are extremely frustrating. You have a tank with superhuman strength who will rip concrete walls out and fling them at you. A witch that will knock you down and drain your energy if you bother her. A hunter that pounces from a distance to take you out, and a smoker that releases a smoke cloud then drags you in with it's toungue. It makes finding any kind of tactical position impossible, but with pre-planned routes and no kind of creativity you can't really reach any valuable tactical position anyways.

Overall, I'd recommend renting this out, especially if you don't have LIVE. Single player can get monotonous and I think you could cover everything good about the game in one rental. Unless you're a zombie superfan, I wouldn't recommend buying this without a test drive first.

5 out of 5 stars Who thought playing with zombies could be so much fun?   November 18, 2008

Plain and simple, this is the best zombie game to date!

The AI "Director" as it's called creates a different play experience each and every time. Doesn't matter if it's the same level, they'll throw different amounts of the "infected" (zombies) at you, from different directions, at different times, which completely changes the games replay value. And it not only controls the zombies, it also controls music, weapon placement (so certain weapons aren't in the same place each and every time you play), and so on.

And you never know how deformable the terrain is until the Director throws a Tank at you (a really HUGE musclebound zombie that will rip you to shreds). For example I had a Tank come bombing at me, rip a whole in a subway car and just destroy everything around me, including myself...

Now one of the main reasons you should buy the game, the split screen and system link play. You can play split screen with a friend, then hookup online with another friend. Then to take it to a whole-nother-level, 8 player versus mode. Up to four players take control of the Survivors and up to four players take control of the unique zombies (such as Tanks and Smokers) along side of the AI controlled zombies.

The other unique feature the game has are voice commands between the survivors, some are even automatic like when you are reloading, so that the other survivors don't reload at the same time just in case zombies start coming at you. A nice feature that really prevents everyone from reloading at once and getting swarmed.

I would consider this the "must have game of the season" bar none!

Pros:
A completely different gaming experience every time you play.
Play with friends on the same system via split screen, online, or both!
Very tense and suspenseful music and spooky sounds give you the creeps.
TONS of replay value.
Amazing zombie death animations (physics based).
AI survivors will actually heal themselves, heal eachother, heal you, and exchange items!
Never knowing when something really bad is about to come down on you.

Cons:
AI survivors sometimes just stand in the way or don't help you when you are in trouble.

This has been the best game I have played in a long long time. I can only compare it to when Doom II came out. Nothing since has been thins enjoyable.
The ambiance is good, the little details are also well thought out.
you limping when injured, taking time to heal, the music changing when a big fight is about to happen. Just beautiful.
This is a game that has been waiting to be made.
Hats off to the developers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If I had to only purchase 1 game this year I would trade in crysis, bioshock, spore etc etc for this one

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ZOMBIE MOVIE VIDEO GAME FINALLY!!!!!   November 18, 2008

I played through the first level solo with three Computer AI Controlled comrads and it was good. I then, twenty minutes after the rooftop battle, played through the same first level with my 12 year old daughter on two player co-op mode with two computer AI comrads and the game wemt up a whole three notches higher. I was attacked by the long tongue mutant three times and we all got threw up on by another infected mutant almost ten times. My screen was a mucus translucent green. The hordes attacked us more often in swarms than when I went through the game solo. 28 day, weeks, months,...hell whatever, these guys hit the nail right on the head with this type of game. I recommend this game to all uuber gamers out there. Oh, if you are the blast away and destroy everything in your sight type of player then you will wind up killing you team mates and die like Bill did in front of the hospital by the wirch that jumps out of the ambulance.. If you think you can go through this game minus the other AI or human controlled players then you are a certified idiot. You will die faster than the economy. Team work is paramount and I wish Capcom would take notice, because the melee attacks are Good in this game. Three strikes and a zombie is down. Smooth controls and a cool head are all you need in this game. I just hope they make the four player option offline a reality on the PS3 incarnation.
