It's fun to play on multiplayer. The achievements are pretty cool. The replay value is decent.
The AI isn't the greatest, since at some points the NPCs will: randomly run away from you, shoot through you at zombies, stand in front of you instead of crouching, and hand you pills in the middle of a flood of zombies.

Left 4 Dead - Circa 2008
GOOD:
- The main draw for this game is the four player co-op which works flawlessly and is a blast to play through with your buddies; the pacing is great for the four player co-op giving each player enough to do so no one feels left out.
- You can drop in or out or take a break at any time and let the computer take over your character so the other human players will never have to wait for you to return just to continue playing.
- The A.I. Director is a computer program that will control how many zombies you will face and control when and where you face off against special "boss" zombies. This keeps the game fresh and unpredictable.
BAD:
- No real plot to speak of and most of the story told with messages written on the walls.
- The game only has four chapters at four levels per chapter you can beat the entirety of this game with friends in less then a day.
- More and different multiplayer modes would have been really nice.
IF IT FITS YOUR TASTE:
- The games theme and setting take place during an apocalyptic zombie pandemic in modern day America.
- This is a First Person Shooter (FPS) game, but the big difference being that this is a game that is really meant to be played online with three other players as a team (a four player co-op game). Think of the action in this game as Arcade style a pick up and play game with little introduction and story.
- The four player co-op mode is main game, but there is an eight player versus mode where two teams of four take turns being the survivors and "boss" zombies, one team will play through the main game while other `zombie' team will try to stop them.
- The player characters are Francis (a biker dude with tattoos), Louis (an African-American office worker), Bill (Vietnam veteran who is a bit elderly), and Zoey (a female college student). Since the game is four player co-op one person will be each character.
- The different types of zombies called bosses that you will face besides the normal weak human zombie types are: the Hunter an agile zombie that can jump on and pin down players from a distance, the Smoker a zombie with a long tongue that can choke out and drag away players from a distance, the Boomer a really fat zombie whose vomit can blind the player and attracts more zombies to said player, the Tank a big muscular zombie that can beat the players to death, and finally the Witch who will sit in the players path crying but when a player provokes her she will attack with claws.
- There are only three gun types you can use in the game outside of the (pretty weak) pistol (note: that all players start with a pistol which has infinite ammo later you can carry two), the gun types are the Shotgun (upgrades to Combat Shotgun), the Semi-Automatic Uzi (upgrades to Combat Assault Rifle), and the Sniper Rifle (with no upgrade versions).
- This game only has four levels (which are short but can take a lot longer to beat on harder difficulty settings). The levels are No Mercy which takes place in city then hospital, Death Toll which takes place in small town then countryside, Dead Air which takes place in a city then air port, and Blood Harvest which takes place on in the woods and then on a farm.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- All the Chapter levels have a movie poster mock-up about that level starting all four of the in game player characters.
- A download for this game is out give a new mode where you're timed to beat a chapter in multiplayer.

I bought this game just because I heard it was good. at first I thought it would not be because the graphics did not look that great. but low and behold this game is amazing. It is so much fun to play the versus mode. You get to play as the infected and try to kill the 4 survivors before they make it to the end. Seriously what other game can you puke on someone and the vomit attracts hordes of zombies. that is my type of game. I promise you will not be disappointed. Also I do know the GOTY edition is out but dont worry if you get the standard because the content is available to download for free via xbox live.

Left 4 Dead is a masterpiece. So fun to play online multiplayer. Four on four matches that last an hour or more. Strategy and teamwork are essential for victory. Every match is different and the fun never ends for me. (I will likely play several hours today). Quantum of Solace, GOW 2, World at War, all gather dust. Can't wait till L4D 2 comes out this fall.
You will not be disappointed with this game.

I'm tired of the whole infected zombie/human franchise, will it ever end. This game is nothing more than, who can kill the most zombies, YAY!! how creative. Shoot, kill, hordes chase you, kill, shoot, more hordes, YAY!!. Btw, lets list the movies, Dawn Of The Dead, Day Of The Dead, 28 days later, 28 weeks later, Quarantine, I Am Legend(infected humans, same thing), and the list goes on. But this review is about the game, its just boring and losing its taste after about ten minutes. The PC version looks and plays much better, even if i do hate it. The Graphics are solid, Valve looking cities, apartments, streets etc. Only reason i gave it two stars is for that reason. Other than that, if you want some real fun, play the Resident evils, at least they have depth, and story and are very fun and challenging to play.:D
