A good balance of science and personal experience February 21, 2010 Bill (USA) First, I love dogs. The two dogs I have had in my life have provided a continual source of joy. Second, I am very interested in the cognitive sciences, understanding how the brain works. Therefore, when my kids saw this book they knew it would be a perfect Christmas gift for their dad.
Although there is a lot of good science in this book, this is no sterile, soulless examination of animal psychology. Alexandra Horowitz does an excellent job of combining both the science around dogs along with the love of dogs. Her love of dogs really comes through, so that immediately makes me a fan.
While the book provides some very practical advice on how to get the most out of your relationship with your dog, there is also a good deal of information on how a dog's brain works. As you read this book, you can see how to develop a richer, more rewarding experience of having a dog.
There are also important points that can be applied to more than just dogs. For example, the book presents the concept of a umwelt (OOM-velt). The concept is to capture what life is like from the perspective of the animal. This is not just good advice when discussing the relationship one has with their dog, but with anyone.
If you have a dog, are interested in dogs, or are interested in how brains work, pick up this book. It is a good read.
Greatest respect for this author, research and Pump! February 19, 2010 Teresa L. Heintzman (Louisville, KY, USA) I enjoyed this book very much. I learned or confirmed my own suspicions about why dogs act as they do in reading this book. Alexandra Horowitz has a wonderfully warm but not sentimental writing style. I was fascinated by her research and reread many passages. One of those books I just hated to finish. I cannot imagine a dog lover not enjoying this rare revisioning of the creatures we thought we knew and loved so well. I do look at my sweet collie with new eyes and try to listen better. Thank you Alexandra. More please!
PS: I do wish Pumpernickel could have graced the front dust cover.
Inside of a Dog February 9, 2010 Gary Christopher Mounier This is just the coolest book. I gave a few of them to my dog loving family members at Christmas and it was a big hit for all the recipients
I thought it was excellent! February 4, 2010 Charles E. Carroll (Texas) I don't think this book was intended to be a scientific paper on dog intellect or dog training. It was for the many dog lovers that want to know a little more about how their dogs think. It was the first book I have read and immediately started to read again when finished. And, the cover was so appropriate! My dogs already appreciate my training.

Reads like a text book for vet school. Found it mostly boring with a few kernels of knowledge I needed to know.
