Good as Advertised February 25, 2010 Jason E. Janke (BRF, WI USA) TBOB is one of the best books I've ever purchased. Simmons does an excellent job of informing and entertaining with this marvelous piece of literature. Footnotes are at times laugh-out-loud funny. Bill did his homework and we're all the better for it.

Wow February 23, 2010 JB1031 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A great read. It's scary how much Simmons knows about the NBA. Yes the book is enormous, but you know what, it needed to be. Only a few times (during some of the rankings) did I think it dragged on. But overall a great read and you never felt like you were really reading a 702 page book.
Oh and I now know the meaning of "the trinity", its worth the $20 for the book right there.
The Book of Basketball February 22, 2010 Peter M. Plummer This book gives not a brief, but a very detailed history of the game of basketball of the NBA and the ABA from beginning until now. Simmons is a very credible source as he has been going to Boston Celtics games since he was a kid and has read numerous books on the NBA. Simmons has a great way of adding funny tidbits about every player and situation. This book is a very enjoyable read from beginning to end. He goes in to detail about what players mattered and which ones didn't and talks about the most important thing when it comes to winning basketball as he explains, "The Secret". I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the history of basketball and is looking to find out how the game was different through the generations.
Love the Sports Guy February 22, 2010 Matthew Jennings (Geelong, Australia) Great book, different way of writing, but his own unique awesomeness. Can be easy to put down as its well broken up, or you can just plow through it. a great way to get to understand the game of b-ball
Too much BIll Simmons, not enough basketball February 18, 2010 Bhishma 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Mick told Rocky, "You haven't been hungry since you won that belt!" The same goes for Bill Simmons. He has made himself too much of a character in his writing, and it's that way in this book, which is more of a 700 page column.
On top of that, his constant porn references, are very similar to Mel Gibson's thirst for bloody violence.
So why give it two stars and not one? Well, he has made an effort to put a theme in this book, starting with the secret of how to play basketball, then comparing Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain in that line, then he puts in a long running history of the game, then a Top 96 players, Top teams, and an all-time team. In this he has some failures, like putting Vince Carter in the Top 96, after saying that secret was so important, important enough to get Robert Horry on his list. Once gets the sense from reading the book that Mr. Simmons might just make a good GM, and the Timberwolves should have hired him. He would have at least kept Kevin McHale as coach, saved the career of Al Jefferson and Kevin Love, brought Ricky Rubio to America, and if it didn't work out, trade all the good players to the Celtics. Plus there'd be orgies.
