Great Train Set January 11, 2010 Luis Davila I bought this for my son and he loves it. Also the fact that it is compatible to other train sets like Thomas' and that one can get expansion packs for it.
Happy toddler January 7, 2010 T. Robertson (Michigan) My 26 month old son received this from his Grandparents for Christmas and he was so very excited! After my husband got it all set up the three of us played with it and enjoyed watching our son play with the train, talking about the colors of the trains and making train noises! Our two complaints are that several of the wooden tracks were warped and wouldn't lie flat on the table or fit together and that the tracks fall apart too easily with the slightest amount of pressure or a tiny shift the support gets dislodged and the tracks fall. We are looking at putting in little screws to the supports to help keep it solid. All in all its a great toy and our son is thrilled!
Great Train Set January 7, 2010 A. Clark (Manchester, MD) This is a fantastic wooden train set. It has tons of pieces and all are well made. This and the other Melissa and Doug products we have are high quality, very durable toys.
Fun and sturdy but... January 4, 2010 Ivdanaen (Seattle) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am happy with this product, it is good quality and provides a lot of fun for our 2 and 3 year old kids. The reason I am giving it only 4 stars is that the traks that go up/ the bridge, are not stable at all, they get knocked down very easily, even if we are using the sure tracks to help them stay together. By the way, the train set SHOULD HAVE INCLUDED these sure tracks, why do we have to buy them separate, when the tracks don't stay up at all without them. And it is not only that you have to pay $25 more for two sets of sure tracks, but if you don't read the reviews, you don't know you need them too and have to make another purchase...
I don't know how Thomas tracks stay together, so maybe they are the same when it's about the wooden tracks. I heard that the plastic tracks stay together better. I agree with what other reviewer said that the parents have to waste their time putting these tracks together all the time, OR glue them on the train table, as many did. I understand now why! Our kids like to put the tracks together but they can't do a whole layout yet, so they always need help.
I love about this train set that it is BIG, lots of pieces and it comes with 2 trains with more cars/tenders, (express train/ passenger train), and a truck. I can say that I like them even more than the Thomas trains (we have both). By the way, they ARE compatible!
I am not sorry I got this train set, especially that it is about 4 times cheaper than Thomas train sets of this size. And I think that Thomas trains have the same issue about the tracks, as many parents glued the tracks on the train table too.
xmas present for 28 month old January 3, 2010 Nicole H (Pottstown, Pennsylvania United States) I saw this on amazon and eyed it up for my 2 year old for xmas. i was going to wait until after black friday but i saw the price starting to creep up and i bought it for $85 (was $70 the week before and $100 the week after i bought it). I tried to build this and it is still sitting in the box. It doesn't look like they have a lot of circular pieces. I bought this because you got a lot of pieces for the money, i am a big "bang for your buck" type person. Well i think i might have went too far with that because there are TOO many pieces. I tried putting it together once and it sits in the box right now. What annoys me the most is that on the directions they are "lettered" to like letter "m" and there are no letters on the back of the train pieces so you have to first try to decipher which piece is which. If you get that for (and i didn't) the two year old is already causing a godzilla effect to your nice wooden train set.
All in all i am going to say this toy is a bust. If i bought this in the store (and instead of amazon where i'm sure i would have to pay to ship this huge box back) I would take it back to get my $85 back. My son does like the 'trains' that come with it though i do have 2 complaints about them:
1. they are hooked together by magnets which i don't think could ever come off but i try not to get my child things w/ magnets on them for they could become a hazard.
2. the "removable cargo" is a pain and i think my son already lost 1/2 of them.
overall this is probably good for a 5 year old and someone with the patience to put this together, which is not me lol.
