Lasted less than a month February 6, 2009 mama J My 13 year old son received this for Christmas. It's the only present he requested. He already had mastered the 3x3 and the 4x4, so we thought it should be a fun challenge for him. I never thought of investigating the other puzzle cube brands, but after conquering the puzzle, and continuing to try various methods for solving, the Rubik's cube broke. It snapped at the red, white and blue corner. We attempted putting it back together again, but were not able to reassemble it. When I read reviews about speed solving, etc. I discovered that Rubik's considers its 5x5 cube to be fragile, and does not recommend it for "speed cubing". My son was not "speed cubing", but he was trying to get faster, so, now we know. We purchased Eastsheen cubes to replace his loss, and he has been very pleased with them, the set came with a 5x5, a 4x4, and a 2x2, although other combination deals are available. The Eastsheen cubes have already lasted longer than the Rubik's and reviews everywhere seem to validate our experience with what others found. Sad, but true. A Rubiks 3x3 cube will probably last, but when you want the larger ones, purchase a "speed cube", so the fun will last.
Great for any puzzle lover! February 2, 2009 Benjamin C. Ivey (Clinton, MS) I greatly enjoy collecting and solving puzzles. This makes a great addition to any desk or shelf collection.
Lots of Fun February 2, 2009 Sparky I bought this for my husband and he loves it. It is a little difficult to use as it seems fragile. It works great and he has lots of fun with solving it over and over again!
Pretty good for a challange February 2, 2009 A. Kneebone Bought this for my 12 year old after he solved the regular rubiks cube. He likes this and has learned to solve it also and create a checkerboard pattern and some other patterns. This cube is more complex which is good for problem solving. The only concern is that it feels more delicate. The cube is very flexible and you have to be careful how you twist the pieces. My son does not have a problem with that though.
My son hasn't mastered this one yet... February 1, 2009 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
...and he's had it for a month now. He may have to get the online help in the end, but he is bull-headed and will wait a while before giving up, and will still say it is worth having.
All these Rubik's cubes are inexpensive, yet challenging and thought-provoking alternatives to hand held video games for long car drives of doctor's office waits, or any other circumstances when kids have "down" time on their hands. My son takes one to Boy Scout meetings as his troop never has enough business to keep them busy for the whole hour, and does not allow electronic toys to be brought.
I guess I'll have to start looking online for the 6 x 6 and 7 x 7 for next Christmas!
