Must read June 7, 2009 Rob Mentnech (Atlanta GA) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a great book and incredible story that is hard to put down. It should be required reading for all high school students in our schools. If you want to understand the price of freedom, the sacrifices that are made to keep us safe (and the world too) this book does the trick.
Horse Soldiers Opinion June 3, 2009 Mark R. Yeoman 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I just recently read this book, after reading an excerpt in a Men's Journal Magazine. I feel that this is a truly amazing book that captures some of the complex situations that were going on post 9/11/01. For the naysayers who don't feel that certain actions should take place, I feel that the type of operation described in this book is an example that should be adapted to many situations and conflicts around the world. No one truly appreciates freedom that is given to them they need to fight for it.
Afghanistan-The Early Days May 31, 2009 05/11A (Overseas) 16 out of 24 found this review helpful
Horse Soldiers is an excellent read. For those of you who have an interest in the early days of our intervention into Afghanistan, Horse Soldiers provides a deep and enduring descriptive review of the facts and circumstances..and insights to the SF soldiers who made history.
Make no mistake...the 5th Group plus the Night Stalkers are truly the best of the best...in the tradition of the early days...those of World War II operators parachuting into Nazi held France or Bright Light missions into Laos along the border areas of Vietnam. This is a story of .."brave men do"...! If any of them read this...we all are proud of your accomplishments in hopes you and your family are well.
I would also recommend Pete Blaber's book..."Mission, Men and Me". I received both books the same day...Blaber's book is also a great read for those who have an interest in Operation Anaconda/March of 2002 and insights into Delta's operational mix into the fight. But, most of all..the AAR of it all...Operation Anaconda and the problems/challenges which occurred.
In short, both books provide an overwatch to what today's military is all about...duty, honor and country.
Make no mistake...we will prevail in Afghanistan.

This book could have used an editor May 25, 2009 Mass Reader (Western Mass.) 21 out of 59 found this review helpful
Howler sentences that start with one subject and end with another, inattention to others that repeat themselves ("Goddamnit it, anyway!" for example), this cartoon version of the Afghan war features two-dimensional soldiers with tear-jerker backgrounds must have been poured out of the author's word processor into the publisher's sausage machine. Reading it after finishing "Tree of Smoke" was a real disappointment. Now "Tree of Smoke" is astonishingly well written, but that's a review for another place.
A Most Inspiring Story May 25, 2009 Mrs. G (Los Angeles, CA, USA) 10 out of 14 found this review helpful
Someone wrote that this was a small story fluffed up. No, I remember it vividly. It was very inspiring following the dreadful and disheartening attack on downtown New York City and unprecedented murder of 3000 US citizens on American soil. I haven't read all of the book yet - I am anxious to see if FBI agent turned CIA operative turned State Department Assistant Secretary, Henry Crumpton, the American James Bond, is in the book. He is an amazing individual also.
