5 out of 5 stars Historically honest peek at life during WW ll   November 19, 2009
Mary Ann Wilson
This book is a fun read.It is very well written. I could not put it down, and immediately ordered it for my sister. The subjects lived through hardships we can only imagine. That story is told, but there is much humor. The characters are all fascinating people. I felt sad that there will be no sequel.

5 out of 5 stars Very refreshing book   November 17, 2009
Michelle Lacourse (Los Angeles, CA)
I really enjoyed reading this book. It took a little while getting used to the unique storytelling - letters written back and forth from Juliet to her friends on Guernsey, and Juliet to her friends in London, but once you got used to it, the story unfolded in a beautiful way. The World War II stories were really sad and heartbreaking, but the characters all had a redeeming/positive quality about them that kept the story on a nice balance. The ending was also very satisfying. I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to find a excellent read.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book, it is the author's life work and it shows   November 17, 2009
B. RILEY (Florida)
There are so many reasons to buy this book, I think I have bought five. For my sister in the UK for friends near and far and my own copy which I had to re-read. I could not bear the people I love most, not to own it.
The Channel Islands, my beloved second home..... that this was written, not by a resident, nor even a Brit just astounds me.
Buy it because it tells part of the story of why we should never forget
Buy it because you will fall in love with the characters
Buy it because it shows the strength of the human spirit
Buy it, you will have to buy more copies for those you love.

4 out of 5 stars The power of a good letter   November 17, 2009
R. Nielsen (Riverton, Utah)
"Letter writing is the only device for combining solitude with good company." ~Lord Byron

This book is about the occupation of the island of Guernsey during World War 2, but more than anything it is about friendship and how suffering can bring people together. The character development is without question the strength of the book. It is full of quirky and congenial people. Really I love reading any book about World War 2; I just find it so fascinating, and this was definitely a different perspective than what I have read before.

The writing style was unique in that the book is basically the letters that the characters write to each other. Sadly, my generation may be the last one to have enjoyed receiving a letter in the mail with the advent of the Internet and email. It's just not the same. Letters are much more thought out and personal. That may be why I liked this book so much.

If I cared about romance, I might say that it felt like a great build-up for a somewhat disappointing climax, but I don't, so it wasn't a problem ... I recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful story   November 17, 2009
Marilyn Carr
I was not familiar with the occupation of the British Isles prior to reading this book. I thought it was a wonderful story and loved the format of the book. Juliet was a charming character and I enjoyed almost every word in the book. Good work from an author who was dying and her niece who carried the ball to the finish!
