4 out of 5 stars Entertaining but definitely not a literary masterpiece   November 14, 2009

Stephanie Meyer is famous for one reason: She wrote an engaging story. That is where my compliment for her ends. For an English Lit major, she cannot write to save her life. Her writing style is practically nonexistent. Her grammar is awful and she can't form a coherent sentence to save her life. If you enjoy novels that are beautifully written and vivid in describing things, this is not the novel for you. I wish her writing flowed, but unfortunately it doesn't.

Despite all her flaws in writing, the plot was good. It was an engaging story of first love, for both human and vampire. A lot of readers critique the book in saying Bella and Edward's views and ideas on love and "life" are very black and white. But let's keep in mind that it's the first time they've both felt this way about anyone. Anyone who has ever fallen in love for the first time knows how all consuming, intense, beautiful yet tragic, etc it is. This love plot is no exception to all that. A lot of people argue that Edward is also very bipolar or temperamental and this story seems to approve or condone behavior like his, explaining it away by simply saying it's just a part of being in love. I didn't see it that way though. It was evident to me that his emotions and feelings were so conflicted because even though he loved her so much (after having been alone for almost a century), he also felt his carnal urges for the first time since he became a vampire. So even though he found love for the first time, he was also being forced to confront who he was as a vampire (with a need/thirst for blood). So yes he was moody, but who wouldn't be when they're so conflicted between choosing your natural desires versus your emotional desires.

It's definitely a book about teenagers and their stubbornness/unwillingness and their inability to see the bigger picture, or to be able to take a step back and evaluate. It's about two people finding each other and discovering what love feels like for the very first time. It's about all the insane emotions that comes with that. It's a story that shows us that there's more than what meets the eye. That people/vampires are capable of being more than what they've been told they must be. That people can change, adapt and accept all different types of things.

4 out of 5 stars This one sucked me right in!   November 13, 2009

I'm not going to lie..... I made fun of people for reading (and LOVING) this book. I made fun of them A LOT! And then i read it..... and could not put it down. I picked it up innocently enough..... just grabbed a friend's copy and skimmed through the first chapter. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. My skim of the first chapter turned into me devouring the first 100 pages without coming up for air.

Yes - the book isn't perfect..... and it's written for young adults..... and it's about vampires..... and there are a lot of over-the-top descriptions ("alabaster skin" comes to mind), but there is just something about this story that drew me in - and pretty much everyone I know. As much as we all tried to resist, we fell victim.

It's a light read, highly entertaining and enjoyable, and the 400+ pages just FLY by - I think I finished it in less than 2 days. So if you haven't read it yet, and you're reading reviews to decide if you should finally give in - DO IT! You probably won't regret it!

I have read the entire series and loved each and every book. I have to be honest, before this book I've never read an entire book in my life(I'm 22), not even in school or college for a book report. I hated to read, but I LOVE STEPHENIE MEYERS work! It's so REAL and you get to know the characters as if they were real. I recommend this book, I recommend the entire series. Even if you don't like the paranormal aspect you will still love the adventure and the love story. I cried, laughed and carried them everywhere I went so if I had a free minute I could read some more. Read them, you won't be disappointed!

2 out of 5 stars Vacous, vapid vampire seeks same...   November 13, 2009

I read this looking for entertainment but left feeling worse than bulimic. Guilty pleasures shouldn't make you feel sick afterward, but this one did.

Lackluster Bella has no goals except to get away from selfish, Me Generation mom. She moves to small town Forks, Washington to live with absentee dad where she immediately falls for the most beautiful boy in school, Edward Cullen.

Bella, supposedly a smart girl, is taken with this moody, cantankerous boy at first because he plays hard to get and later because he is so darned gorgeous. Never mind that this boy is really a vampire who would just a soon kill her as kiss her, or that he and his family are too dumb to stop trolling the halls of the local high school as a means of hiding in plain sight due to lack of interest in killing the humans they feel compelled to feed on.

Vampires who are hundreds of years old but can't seem to figure out how to join the Armed Forces for sanctioned killing or how to steal from the local blood bank shouldn't intrigue smart girl, nor anyone with an IQ higher than Forrest Gump, but here's the catch: they do.

Let's face it. This is a book about a creepy, hundred year old man who is still attracted to a high school girl and a high school girl who is in way over her head. God forbid she ever gets a paper cut or (yikes!) have her period. She'd be better off marrying a serial killer. Or maybe that's book four.

1 out of 5 stars Enough already with the glorious angelic Edward!   November 13, 2009

The fact this book has made it so big worries me about not only the reading tastes in this country but their view of love.

Edward is a stalker. He secretly watches Bella sleep at night long before she knows about it. Then after she does know, he stays with her at night while she cuddles with him, and they both keep this a secret from her father, of course (this is still going on in the 3rd book which I am painfully making my way through now).

Bella lies a lot to her father and to her friends. A lot. Parents, take note, you are on thin ice if you chide your teen for lying if you are reading this book and think it's great.

The absolute most wearisome thing about this book are the endless descriptions of Edward: his "marble" forehead, his "cold" hands, his "stone" lips, his "icy" arms and legs, his "angelic" face, his "beautiful" face, his "glorious" face, he is an "angel," he's "like a god," he's "godlike," on and on and on ad nauseam. Yech!

And let's not forget that Edward was and is attracted to Bella because of the smell of her blood. How romantic!

So he's a beautiful angel (and his skin glistens in the sun) but he's basically an animated corpse. After all, he died in 1917 or somewhere around there. It worries me when women are swooning over an animated corpse who is also a vampire.
