Good Beginner Photo program November 25, 2009 Jennifer Medlock (AZ) This is a good beginner photo program. I agree with most reviews that it really doesn't stand up to a lot of the other programs out there. I ended up installing it on my mom's computer. She likes to "play" with her photos, but she is not very computer savy so this was basic enough for her that she loved it. For me, the main issue is that it took to long to do what I wanted it to do and there were still limits. I did like the calendar feature, but I felt that the cards could have been better, instead they were just....simple.
If this is your first photo program, give it a try...if you want to do some more advanced stuff...maybe look somewhere else.

Too Much Muscle for the Novice, Perhaps Too Shiney and Cost-Prohibitive for the Pro November 25, 2009 Donald P. Martin Jr. (Concord, NH) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I absolutely need to preface this by saying I am definitely the novice in the title for my review, and I will try to keep it short, adding on if I find something world-shaking in upcoming days and months. Testing this product for review was hyper-difficult, and I had several friends involved to help me; even after weeks of tinkering, I feel like I can just take the training wheels off, so to speak... so please know that my review is written mostly from the perspective of a rookie with much advice from three others who are much more seasoned; one who does graphic arts for a living.
Therefore, if you are like me and don't have much experience with photo toys, then read on, but if you are more experienced, you'll probably find more helpful advice from other reviewers.
The first impressions I had for this software was, "wow, this takes up some space on the old hard drive, doesn't it?" I am fortunate to have just replaced my old lap top with a new one, because the requirements for the software rival the requirements of an online game like WOW or LOTRO (Lord of the Rings Online). The software takes up about a GIG of space, but the requirements suggest 4 gig. If you want to enjoy the product to the fullest, you should definitely make sure your computer meets the requirements, because even my shiney new toy bogged down a little at times.
My professional friend told me that a big part of the demands of this product probably have to do with the very snazzy-looking user interface. He actually said that this would drive him crazy. "It's like inventing a holographic heads-up display to control your coffee maker," he said, "just give me a switch where I need a switch, a button where I need a button, and a dial where I need a dial."
The second thing I noticed was something the keynote reviewer above noted; BE VERY CAREFUL OF HOW YOU TREAT YOUR FILES because this product will, seemingly without warning, EDIT YOUR ORIGINAL PICTURE SO YOU CAN NEVER GET IT BACK. I found out about this immediately, but thankfully, all of my pictures are stored on a backup drive in case of a catastrophic event, like a fire, or if the cat urinates on the computer and kills it (you never know; I think one of my cats is vindictive that way). So please be warned. My professional friend told me right there that the product would never find its way into his studio with such a glaring problem. "Would you buy a humidor for all of your Cuban cigars if it came with a self-destruct button on the handle?" I wish I had his power of analogy, and I don't even smoke cigars.
Basic photo editing is what I've done in the past; creating photobooks on Snapfish (or was it one of the other online places? I don't recall). To me, cropping, removing red eye, correcting lighting issues or contrast issues is a snap with this product. Most of what us novices want to do is simple like that. Personally, I've done that online for free. I go to one of the websites where you can fix a photo, fix it, then order prints. Creating photobooks, greeting cards, that sort of thing? I think this Corel Paintshop Photo Express 2010 is 80% unnecessary for those tasks, but it really does those tasks well.
The advanced stuff, well, as I mentioned, is out of my league, but my graphics pro connection tells me that much of the stuff it has... can actually be DOWNLOADED SAFELY FROM THE INTERNET FOR FREE. Now, I know he has a full shelf of photo-editing software at home, so I know he's purchased plenty that couldn't be downloaded for free, so I asked him if he was advising the novice that is me, and he said "yes, to an extent... the other products that he has all do the same kind of thing that PaintShop Express 2010 does, except for more efficiently, faster, and cheaper.
I am happy with the edits that I have done, but I don't think that I would spend the $35 or so to purchase Corel PaintShip 2010, mostly based on the adviced of my friends, but also based on the facts that most of what I have done with this product could have been done with the software that actually came with my computer, or can be found online. My best advice? Read more of these reviews to see how many people say similar things to what I did. CP2010 is a good visual toy, and it serves it purpose just fine... but there seems to be a lot more flash than product.
Good Stuff! November 24, 2009 Michael Kear (Enid, Oklahoma) Corel PaintShop Photo Express 2010 is easy to install and easy to use. I've used Picasa for years. Corel has several additional qualities that make processing your pics even better. Along with retouching photos you can fix red-eye, crop, and edit with ease. Better than Picasa, however is Corel's print at home function. You can also burn photos to DVD and post photo slideshows directly to YouTube, Facebook and Flickr. If you take and share lots of pics, this is definitely a good investment!
Nice software, Easy to use November 24, 2009 E. Perry (Rumford, RI United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm not the most sofware savvy person around, so I was very pleased with how simple this program is, easy to use right out of the box. I also have Photoshop on my computer and I must say, I'm usually overwhelmed with it, I feel like I need an instructor to explain everything to me, and I know I'm not using it to its potential, simply because I can't figure everything out on my own. Corel PaintShop Photo Express is much more straightforward and extremely user friendly, even for someone as computer challenged as myself. It only takes minutes to upload your photos and view and organize them as you choose. You can download from your memory card, camera, or mobile phone. The editing software is simple, you can fix and improve photos with the touch of a button. Crop, rotate, sharpen, remove red eye, even whiten teeth. There are plenty of fun tools for embellishing your photos, like frames, filters for black and whites, sepia tones, etc. There are creative projects for making cards, collages, calendars, and photo albums. Printing photos of many sizes with professional looking results is quick and easy. PaintShop Express is not limited to just still photos, there are lots of things to do with videos as well. You can upload your photos and video projects to YouTube, Flickr, Facebook and email quickly with automatic photo resizing. The software also lets you burn cds and dvds to give as gifts or for storage. I would highly recommend this to people who want a simple, easy to use program with fun features. I do intend to learn how to use PhotoShop one day, but in the meantime, I'm very satisfied with PaintShop Express and I'll get a great deal of use out of it.
