1 out of 5 stars Keep your word, Amazon   February 10, 2010

Amazon offered Windows 7 Upgrades as a "purchase with Windows 7 laptop purchase" to "upgrade your home computers to Vista" in Nov. 09. I purchased the laptop and chose the 7 Ultimate upgrade as it was one of the options. Hubby downloaded 7 Ultimate first on to his newly purchased from Amazon Windows 7 Home Prem. OS laptop, and then onto my Vista Home Prem. OS laptop. After a month, my laptop's background screen has turned black, I constantly receive pop-ups that report product is counterfeit-I need a new Product Key #, and it crashes frequently. Amazon gave me Microsoft Supplies tel.# but Microsoft told me Amazon's version is good for only one computer. Amazon has apologized, and offered a 20% discount, or a refund. It took 8 hours to download the software on two computers, all I want is a second Windows 7 Ultimate Product Key or software as promised. Otherwise we would've downloaded Windows Anytime Upgrade to the new laptop as that version is $70 cheaper! Hubby is not removing the 7 Ultimate from his laptop to return the software, only to reload it with the Anytime Upgrade, and I'm not removing their Counterfeit version from my laptop and paying full price for a new Ultimate 7 upgrade which takes 6 hours to download. Keep your word Amazon!

1 out of 5 stars Misrepresented! Windows 7   February 8, 2010

When making the purchase I understood it to be able to be installed on two computers as I have a pc and a laptop.
After a month or so the laptop stop working the product and when contacting Microsoft I got 6 or 7 800 #'s to call
and got India 3 of the times.
Not always the easiest area to communicate with.
Got the proverbial runaround.
Not happy at all.

4 out of 5 stars Beware of hidden costs.   February 8, 2010

Many of us have been disappointed and genuinely angry about Windows Vista: it has useless features, complexities and problems that make its use more than a problem. The reaction has ranged from "can I return this to the manufacturer" to passive frustration in near silence and now to "there's a solution out there called Windows 7... and it could not be worse than Vista... and maybe it's better".

Many of us also pay for extended warranty protection and both hardware and software support. I am one of those buyers who has tended to pay extra amounts up front to "protect my investment" and hopefully make the use of my laptops less difficult and more problem free, knowing that the up front cost can be steep and "problem free" a rare and temporary state of affairs.

This is the case with a Dell laptop (Model XPS M1530) I purchased in the last year and for which paid the substantial additional cost of a supplemental warranty and service contract extending through 2011 for the laptop/hardware, software and the extended support. Last week I finally decided after considerable deliberation to purchase Windows 7 and through Dell's live on-line service communicated with an engineering service representative who was more than delighted to sell me the Windows 7 package, which comes in various "strengths" and hence at various price points.

I had done some homework on the Microsoft website which had what appeared to be slightly lower costs but made the decision to buy from Dell keeping my purchases within the "sphere" of Dell and its contractual performance obligations. The Dell sales person told me to contact Dell when I received the discs and that they would help me to install the "custom" version of the software. When I attempted to seek their help several days later they informed me that their "help" on installation would cost me $129 per hour, which was not disclosed up front.

Even worse Dell has subsequently informed that because I purchased the software from "Dell Retail", a "separate company" my warranty coverage on the laptop's operating system is no longer in effect and that I must now pay $129 per hour for support relating to software problems... a loss of warranty and a cost that was never disclosed to me. So not only did I lose value from the original extended service contract but I paid $340 for the Windows 7 software that will now cause me to pay service fees I was never informed of.

I put all this out there as a warning to those who may be confronting the same decision. Dell's lack of disclosure may well violate Massachusetts Consumer Protection laws as well as those in New York and California. Even if it does not constitute violation of any laws it demonstrates a "way of doing business" that is deplorable, disgusting and foul. Many of us don't mind paying additional sums for good perforamnce and service but we do not like material information withheld from us an any point especially when we are making a purchase decision.

The Dell people have referred to this outcome as their "company policy".

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't work with my laptop   February 5, 2010

After I installed this software I went to HP support to upgrade my laptop to the windows 7 software upgrades. After installing all the HP upgrades my laptop still had many problems getting my quick launch buttons to work. I ended up erasing the hard drive and reinstalling my original vista software ( which, by the way, works just fine.)

3 out of 5 stars It's fine. But not worth it.   February 4, 2010

I'm just an everyday user. I use my laptop to check email, surf the web, watch movies, nothing extraordinary. I'll be honest, I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate because my college offers it at a bargain price. I don't do very complicated things with my laptop, so all the little technicalities that are supposedly awful with Vista didn't affect me too much.

There are quite a few things that are redeeming with this OS. My favorite feature is the snap function. I do a lot of multitasking and this feature is incredible. Saves time, works seamlessly. I like how the gadgets aren't limited to the sides of the desktop and can be moved around everywhere. The themes are fairly cool and you can also make your own desktop background slideshow. UAC is nowhere near as obnoxious. Overall, it does boot faster than Vista, so no complaints there. Mostly everything works. Wireless works. My printers and external hard drives work. The actual process of upgrading was easy. I popped the disc in and it did its thing.

I'm lukewarm on the new taskbar format. I loved it at first, but it's annoying if you're working with multiple windows of the same program. You must hover over the button on the taskbar in order to show all the windows that are running in that one program. There is about a half-second lag between when you hover and when the little screens pop up. It saves space for those who work with many, many windows simultaneously as it combines all of the windows from one program into one button, essentially. However, there is a way to go back to the traditional taskbar, and I opted to do that. Additionally, you must download your run-of-the-mill basic software (photo gallery, Windows Mail) from Microsoft or other places because Windoes 7 got rid of them. That part wasn't a big deal.

My biggest gripe with Windows 7 is HDMI. The audio does not transfer over to the television, ladies and gentlemen. You're stuck using your built-in PC speakers or plugging in a set of external speakers out of the headphone jack. The video appears just fine, but there is no sound!!! The worst part is, this functioned perfectly well in Vista. Apparently you need to upgrade your video/sound drivers according to Microsoft, but there is yet a solution for this problem. If anyone knows how to fix this, please let me know. I've researched this topic endlessly. Type in "windows 7 hdmi no audio" in google and you will see that I'm not the only one with this problem. Extremely frustrating!

I would honestly wait. It's slightly better than Vista, but not $200 better. And if you're a frequent user of HDMI, you might want to stick with XP or Vista until they figure this out.
