5 out of 5 stars Screenwriting's Ultimate How-to   October 5, 2009

As an author attempting to adapt my novel Big Easy to screenplay format, I found myself halted by indecision on several occasions. Blake Snyder's Save the Cat saved the day, easing me through the project. Snyder is a good writer, but an amazing teacher. Two thumbs up!

The dichotomy of Art and Commerce is especially stark in Hollywood. I guess there are people who say "I want to be rich, so I'm going to write a screenplay and sell it for millions of dollars instead of, you know, work or learn a trade." If you are one of them, this is your book. But I think most people who actually take the time to write a full screenplay are doing it because they have a story they really want to tell. And this book will make those people want to tear their hair out.
My friend, noted TV writer Eddie Gorodetsky says "Hollywood is the place where people run to where lightning just struck." That's the operating principle in Save the Cat. And it's not completely stupid. People who buy movies want to buy what made a huge amount of money last. But if you have an idea for a movie that you want to make, or even want to see, this will not tell you anything about how to write it. It's all about sales and it made me want to puke.

5 out of 5 stars no pussy-footin' around...   September 27, 2009

snyder writes in a breezy style that suggests much of it might have come from him transcribing his own lectures. on the downside, sometimes he repeats himself and a copy editor might have been helpful. with that said, the book is filled with lots of direct, cleanly-written advice -- this is what you need to know to write a script that will sell in hollywood. the subtitle is that this is the "last screenwriting book you'll ever need" but note it doesn't say this is the "first" book -- within the pages of the book, snyder suggests readers should be get copies of syd field's screenwriting and vicki king's "how to write a movie in 21 days." I think this is a smart move on his part, because snyder does not go through (thankfully) a lot of basics and expects that you have read other screenwriting books and so what he's giving you here is all gravy on top of whichever basic book(s) you've read. well worth reading and his technique for outlining is excellent advice.

His untimely passing will leave a void. He has left some great insight and knowledge in SAVE THE CAT. From LOGLINE to Fade Out. You will be informed and educated. Just remember to credit this book and its writer. when you 'make it'.

BLAKE SNYDER R.I.P.

Blake died of a heart attack in August, 2009. We was a great guy, always open. You could email him and he would email you back! Unheard of really. He was just a generous guy all around. He will be missed.
