Great Expectations August 5, 2009 Seadreamer (Ewing, NJ United States) This show provided everything I was looking for --- even down to the annoyance of Dr. McKay. The ending was superb -- leaving just enough unexplained to perhaps continue the story in movies, which I would look forward to with relish. Great expectations were met and exceeded --- well done!!!
A Disappointing End To A Fun Show August 4, 2009 Thales (Auckland, NZ) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
For many fans it seems season five proved to be a divisive one, with people either enjoying it or throwing SGA's clothes out on to the lawn while calling a divorce attorney. Unfortunately I was one of many packing a suitcase.
Stargate was never in the league of Firefly or BSG as far as critical aclaim was concerned, but it was able to provide some cheap and cheerful fun with a good use of humour and a good cast that had excellent on-screen chemistry. Over the years however SGA suffered through multiple cast changes and no real direction which culminated in a final season where the main four characters barely seemed to share a screen together, where laughs were few and far between, and where everything had become too episodic and formulaic - the show was no longer just paying homage to other shows but cannibalising it's own scripts from previous seasons. Season Five seems to be the season of writer malaise.
This was also the season of McKay: Search For A Wife, Ronon and Teyla: Search For Lines To Say, and Sheppard: Search for #45636 Further Ways To Commit Suicide. For me this was time to: Search For The Remote.
Which is not to say that there isn't some good individual episodes to be found on this set, plus it's packed with enough features to keep many fans happy, but it's a pity that such a fun show wobbled rather gracelessly to it's cancellation rather than going out with a bang.
Stargate Atlantis 5th Season August 3, 2009 Gari A. Basham (Cottonwood, AZ) As with all the Stargate Atlantis DVDs, this one is a great addition to my collection.
What you would expect. July 28, 2009 Shawn Chidester (Lake Forest, CA USA) Basic DVD package what you expect when you buy a DVD package now days extra commentary. Its star gate so you know what to expect great show interesting characters and good effects for most episodes only problem was the abrupt end to the series.
Huge Mistake to Cancel Series July 26, 2009 T. Bragado 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Regarding Season Five, it rates as one of the best. From the beginning with 'Search and Rescue', 'Broken Ties', 'The Daedalus Variations','The Shrine'...which was exceptional, 'Vegas'...an incredibly well done episode that I think is among the best ever, this season only proved the potential of many more stories to come. Every single actor got a chance to shine during this season with performances that should garner at the least exceptional recognition...ex: David Hewlett in 'The Shrine', Rachel Luttrell in 'Prodigal', Jason Momoa in 'Broken Ties', and Joe Flanigan in 'Vegas'.
And then they cancel it. I will never understand why they did so. The show won the People's Choice Award, for crying out loud! The ratings were still up there and getting better, the stories were just really beginning to delve into the characters...finally...and then to cancel it because of money or because they were hot to start yet another spinoff? Those are the worst reasons to cancel a successful series. So the economy is bad but it's getting better. If they can afford to invest in another series, even with paying lower salaries for unknown actors in the balance, then they could have afforded to keep Stargate Atlantis going another year at least as the economy gets better. There was no reason this series could not have gone ten years like SG-1. There was just so much potential for so many more stories. This was one of the few action packed series left running on TV. It was a huge mistake to cancel it.
And I agree with the post about why watch the new series Stargate Universe? If the possibility exists that the bean counters will just choose to cancel it at the height of its success, why waste the time? Bad precedent, bean counters...bad.
Get Season Five of Stargate Atlantis. The audio commentaries are fabulous and shed insight and understanding in how a series is produced, the deleted scenes...they could have added more, it is well worth the investment and the time to watch.
