4 out of 5 stars Bond with No Gadgets   November 6, 2008

I saw Quantum of Solace Today 05/11/2008. The action start with a car chase and goes on to the end of the movie. In short its action packed, however its missing the stuff that all James bond movies delivered before, even Casino royal acted by the same Daniel Craig. It's missing the Bond Gadgets. I mean we will know that Bond had a lot of fancy gadgetry stuff under his sleeve to assist him in escaping a trap and or conquering his villains. There was a documentary with James Bond Thunderball DVD and it was mentioned that the US NAVY was interested with a certain under water oxygen breathing tube that bond used in the movie and also a statement by the Russian KGB that whenever a new Bond Movie is released, they would bring it for screening to inspect the gadgets used in the movie as Bond movies gave them a glimpse on the high-tech stuff they wanted to have to give to their Spy's.
Now don't get me wrong, the movie excels in every shot, however it's not the bond we are used to.
This bond is far too dry and has no scene of humor.

I hope that they correct the story line for the next coming bond movie.

From the UK showing (4 stars out of 5):

The Good Things
*There are quite a few major action scenes with lots of stuntwork. What few special effects the film has are used seamlessly.
*Aside from the jittery action scenes, the movie has a good filming style.
*The story (although kind of thin and convoluted) is interesting. It has a lot to do with environmentalism and the role major corporations play in world politics and economics. The lines between good and evil are blurred to some extent. Overall, the movie offers some interesting things to think about.
*Acting/writing are great. The characters are interesting. Bond's character shows some interesting new insights, particularly in showing the negative effects of his actions (the whole "everything you touch gets ruined" effect).
*Excellent sound design.
*Excellent titles design.
*I like the music.
*Look out for one scene that greatly resembles a famous scene from another Bond movie.

The Bad Things
*The storyline seems a bit convoluted. It also won't make sense unless you see "Casino Royale" first, since it picks up where it left off and has some of the same characters.

The Questionable Things
*Even though there are a lot of neat action scenes, many of them are filmed with a very shaky camera. It makes the scenes more intense and gritty in a way, but also makes it hard to see what's going on. I'm not a big fan of it, but it has its merits.
*Don't expect a whole lot of humor or wild gadgetry.

In terms of style and story, this new Bond film seems to follow in the shadow of other modern espionage films like the Bourne trilogy or "Mission Impossible III." But unlike those, this film still retains the Bond character and closely follows the canon established in "Casino Royale." It focuses really well on how the character has grown and how poisonous he has become. It also has some interesting content concerning the relationship between governments, corporations, economics, and a little bit on ecosystems. Because of all that, I think this is a pretty interesting Bond film. I still prefer "Casino Royale" as the best Bond film, but if you enjoyed it, this is a good follow-up.

5 out of 5 stars The most action-packed Bond ever!!   October 16, 2008

Excellent continuation of Casino Royale. They even give you the recipe to the now famous "Vesper" martini, with a bit more instruction in its preparation. Great film, and twist ending I wasn't expecting!!
