It was better than the book November 13, 2009 SB (Bensalem, Pennsylvania USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Based on my daughter and a friend's rave reviews of the book, I suffered through reading Twilight . I have no idea why this book has become so popular.
And yet, on a whim, I decided to watch the movie. HORRIBLE. It was barely than the book.
Both the book and movie were a complete waste of time.
Unfortunately the movie was laughable . . . November 11, 2009 E. Irwin (California) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The movie gets 2 stars only because I wasn't as horrified the second time I watched it. By then I was merely amused and somehow managed to find a glimmer of hope for the next installment, New Moon. There is a new director and I hope that that is enough to resurrect the story. It's the guy that directed The Golden Compass. Some people seem to think that that movie sucked but the acting and effects were great. If Twilight has been taken as seriously as the Golden Compass, we would all be in love with this movie.
I don't want to simply reiterate the same comments that others have made but I have a few things I would like to add.
I have read 3 out of the four books so I know exactly how much they butchered the plot. I don't think we need to dwell on that point. Some changes were understandable and others were completely unnecessary.
I actually liked the girl who played Bella. She did a commendable job considering the script and the lack of direction which they all obviously received. How was she expected to pull out an amazing and complex performance when the rest of the cast was creating the atmosphere of a Disney afterschool special? She was the only main actor that came close to portraying the character in the book, other than the guy who played Jacob.
I am almost embarrassed for Robert Pattinson. They gave him weird eyebrows! What was he supposed to DO with that? Also, his voice was strange. Perhaps his American accent needs a bit of work because he often sounded like a mob hitman or Rocky Balboa. And his facial expressions were all wrong. Where was suave, tortured, stubborn, mysterious and passionate Edward? Instead he was nervous, creepy, and shy. But I don't really blame the actor, well, not fully. Why? Because every once in a while he would smile casually or glare and I would think "Now that's Edward!" You can see it perfectly in the scene where he opens her door after driving her to school for the first time. He is smiling smugly and he walks with her on his arm with the confidence of the 100 year old vampire he's supposed to be. It seems like it would have been better if Rob just literally played himself rather than trying to BE Edward and that the natural grace that he could have given Edward was suppressed by the director. He has Edward in him but he needs someone to pull it out of him. Besides, I think his look is perfect.
The token Asian and black guy were irritatingly obvious. The continuous mention of the school newspaper and Prom was insulting. Yes, we KNOW we are in high school, thank you very much!
The biggest disappointment was indeed the afterschool specialness of the backing cast's acting and the horrible special effects. Even though the story is in the Young Adult genre, the concepts that it deals with are deep and should have been treated more seriously. However, since the acting was constantly immature across the board (except for brief flashes from Kristen and Rob), I have to believe that this was exactly what the director wanted. What a shame!
I do want to state that if you haven't read the book, you can't really condemn the story. The movie did the book so little justice that you just don't have enough information to do so. Bizarre but true.
Will and Grace ... The High School Years November 8, 2009 Rayscann 4 out of 11 found this review helpful
Hello teenage girls. I know you think this film is a simple story about sharing some deep passionate intense love for a dark forbidding guy who also happens to be a complete gentleman and won't take things further with you for reasons he can't reveal at first, but eventually reveals it's because he's a vampire. It seems terribly romantic, doesn't it? Seems like it's a sign that he truly loves you, that he's willing get beyond his feelings for you because he wants you to be safe? Well, not exactly. The only thing it proves is how totally freakin' stupid you are.
Let me give you a reality check: when you show interest in a teenage guy, who's painfully thin, pale, and has red lips. And this Duran Duran reject puts you off and tells you he's a vampire, he's probably gay. I know, in the film, there's some flying around and weird baseball and bloodsucking that takes place that would seem to indicate that the lead male character is a vampire. But trust me, the entire film is a metaphor for being a hag. Unless you want to be Grace to someone's Will, I recommend you get a clue.
It was the beginning of a new love November 8, 2009 Risslah Andrews-Montgomery (Indiana) It's got a touch of "The Thorn Birds" and "Romeo and Juliet", yet by the end of the series, they all live happily ever after. "Twilight" is just the beginning.
Just trying to enjoy the movie for what it is. November 5, 2009 David Foughty 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Don't spend your time comparing it to the book. If you just sit there comparing the book and the movie, you'll take the fun out of the movie itself. If you are a book reader, reading Midnight Sun really helps understand Edward's reactions and such. This is the best movie I've seen that has stayed the closest to the book as much as it could. I do understand why they made a few changes to please some of the moviegoers who haven't read the book. It ties things in a different but acceptable way. I loved how they interpreted the book. I understand that it was a teen movie so of course there was a little cheesiness at times. But hey, the book is geared towards a teen audiences regardless of the wide age range that actually reads it. I think Summit did a good job and can't wait for New Moon.
