The character is an iconic cop, imperfect yet still trying to get it done. Dirty Harry touched a nerve with the public at large and he was still misunderstood. Throughout the series, little hints were provided indicating that Harry Callahan was always trying to do the right thing. Why? "You wouldn't believe me if I told you." Remember the context and the movie becomes a time capsule of Old Fashioned American Values. Dirty Harry always kept the Victim's Rights ahead of the bad guys. Harry Callahan, a cop's Cop.
Own the iconic series December 16, 2008 Graboidz (Westminster, Maryland) 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
Long before Clint Eastwood was considered a "serious" actor, he was known to us B-movie lovers as the star of such fantastic fare "Any Which Way You Can", "The Gauntlet", "Firefox" and of course "Dirty Harry". Here is Harry at his dirtiest. You get all five "Dirty Harry" films in this collection as well as some nifty extras (that 90% of us don't really care about). The films look great and you owe it to yourself to own this collection of films that helped launch Clint into superstardom.
"Dirty Harry" - The original flick is still fantastic as Harry must track down a sniper. This film set the blueprint for all cop movies that follow. What is now considered cliche was launched in this film. The renegade cop out for justice, the well meaning but doomed partner, and the nifty one liners that Clint always has on hand.
"Magnum Force" - A decent sequel has Harry tracking down a murderer who is targeting local bad guys, dishing out some vigilante justice of their own. Hal Holbrook plays Harry's stressed Captain in this entry and is fantastic. A great solid story carries this one along very well.
"The Enforcer" - This may be my favorite entry in the series. It features Tyne Daly as Harry's newest partner, and the chemistry between Eastwood and Daly could be considered the prototype of all those cop-buddy movies that soon followed. Add in a group of bad guys that take over Alcatraz Island, and you have a real winner.
"Sudden Impact" - Sondra Locke finally wormed her way into the Dirty Harry series, and she actually does a good job. Once again someone is taking the law into their own hands, and Harry is on the case. This may feature the greatest one liner in the series with "Make my day!", and the supporting cast does a great job. I liked that Harry was more or less on his own in this entry, and the vigilante's backstory does a great job of having you torn between who will win, Harry and the killer.
"The Dead Pool" - Here is the reason for only a 4 star rating. While the idea of someone targeting local San Fran celebrities is a nifty idea, and while this film does feature an soon-to-be A-list cast of Patricia Clarkson, Liam Neeson & Jim Carrey, it's the weakest entry in the series. Harry becomes the target of a lunatic who uses among other tools of mayhem, a remote control car. Yep, if you have ever wanted to see the most lame car chase in movie history, look no further. Watching Clint try to outrun a Radio Shack hotrod is amazing stupid. It ruin the entire film.
But please don't let "The Dead Pool" dissuade you from picking up this fantastic series. Clint is at his growling best in these films, and they are so much fun, you would be doing yourself a disservice by ignoring the series.
More stuff than the last boxset but.. November 15, 2008 zepol 6 out of 10 found this review helpful
Comparing it to the last DIRTY HARRY boxset you do get more extras like badges and booklets. And the transfer of the 1st DIRTY HARRY movie is better, but MAGNUM FORCE looked too pumped up with color in some scenes and grainy. On AMC they had a DIRTY HARRY marathon and they were showing these new dvd transfers. Except for the 1st movie the old transfers are better from the old set.
Made My Day Collection November 14, 2008 Cecil A. Rhodes 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is one of the better compiled collections. The comments from Clint Eastwood regarding the making of the original Dirty Harry and how he got the part was especially interesting. Excellent quality. This is a must collection for those who enjoyed the Dirty Harry movies, and Clint Eastwood in particular.
