My grandparents' generation continues to amaze me October 23, 2009 John C. Mayson IV (Austin, TX USA) Major Dick Winters lead Easy Company from the marshes of Normandy to Bavaria and eventually Austria. What this group of men did during the Second World War is nothing short of a miracle. Maj. Winters writes mostly about his men and only rarely refers to himself. What glimpses he does give us shows what a remarkable leader and man of character he was and still is today. We all owe the men of Easy Company and everyone who fought in The War every bit of respect and gratitude they have earned.
I had already seen the HBO special "Band of Brothers" which helped form some of the context for this book. While reading or watching "Band of Brothers : E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne from Normandy to Hitler's Eagle's Nest" isn't required to enjoy this book, you might want to order it at the same time to get a broader sense of Easy Company.
Great follow up to Band of Brothers October 9, 2009 Maribel E. Johnson (Altoona, IA) My husband is a history buff and read three books on our Mediterranean cruise three weeks ago. This was one of them. He could hardly put it down to enjoy the sea.
Band of Brothers September 22, 2009 Nicholas Stawowy (Michigan) If you liked the HBO series you wont put this down. This man was a great leader.
Beyond Band of Brothers August 21, 2009 Don Hathorn From the first time I saw the DVD series I was facinated with Dick Winters. I was most apprecitive when I found that he had written a book and expounded on his life and experiences during WWII. I have great respect for all of the heroes who entered that terrible time when the world was at war and democracy hang in the balance. I was riveted to Major Winters life story from his early years and upbringing which help shape him as a young man entering into a military life that at first he wasn't sure he wanted but later embraced it.
A natural born leader with integrity, character and moral backbone. I appreciated his direct, clear dissection of the battles he was involved in and the relationships with his men during these time. I felt he was very truthful and forthright as he laid out both the good and bad he saw in men and situations.
You will not want to put this book down until you finish it.
A true model of leadership August 14, 2009 James T. White (Ottawa, KS USA) It would be extremely difficult to pick the "best book" centered on Easy Company, 506th PIR, 2nd Battalion, that has been rightfully publicized by the mini-series, BAND OF BROTHERS. BEYOND BAND OF BROTHERS: THE WAR MEMOIRS OF MAJOR DICK WINTERS, is another interesting source one can read explaining the heroism, discipline, perseverance, comardarie, and bravery of this famous company.
BEYOND BAND OF BROTHERS: THE WAR MEMOIRS OF MAJOR DICK WINTERS by Major Dick Winters is his personal accounting of Easy Company beginning with the formation of the unit through the popularity of it following the mini-series. As a person of interest of this company, this work is the third book I have read regarding Easy Company. Whether it was Stephen Ambrose' fine book BAND OF BROTHERS or BIGGEST BROTHER: THE LIFE OF MAJOR DICK WINTERS THE MAN WHO LED THE BAND OF BROTHERS by Larry Alexander; all of the ones I have comprehended have been interesting, thought-provoking, and touching. This critic will not debate the accuracy of any of the works regarding EASY COMPANY. However, BEYOND BAND OF BROTHERS would need to be placed at the top of the list for its first person accounts by Major Dick Winters.
The most rewarding part of this book is the new focus by Major Dick Winters regarding his characteristics needed for proper leadership in the chapter titled,"Reflections." During my lifetime I have been a teacher, athletic coach, and public school teacher, and have seen poor bosses. What a delight it would have been to present Winters' ideas of leadership to these incompetent leaders and wonder if they would display any of the characteristics outlined by Winters. However, I have been placed in roles of leadership, and done a bad job myself, because I simply did not lead the way with proper character. This chapter is taken to heart in my future endeavors should I be placed in a leadership role in the future.
BEYOND BAND OF BROTHERS: THE WAR MEMOIRS OF MAJOR DICK WINTERS is another solid book written about EASY COMPANY. Though it would be so difficult to top Stephen Ambrose's BAND OF BROTHERS, or the mini-series, BAND OF BROTHERS, this work by Major Dick Winters is a "must read."
