4 out of 5 stars Miracle Worker!   October 25, 2009

The good news is that the upgrade did a good job - my former programs and settings were exactly as before. The disappointment is that I still couldn't view videos (problems with Vista before), and couldn't download new Windows Photo Gallery viewer (have almost 8,000 photos). Very aggravating - hence, my initial one star rating.

Then, wife was able to view videos (I still can't), and Wondows Photo Gallery viewer miraculously appeared. I guess the key here is patience. Hoping I'll be able to view videos soon. If not, it's still better than Vista. Other problems continued from Vista include creating about 80 registry problems and incredibly overloaded temporary files whenever I shut it off - mostly I just put it to sleep when leaving, except for updates.

5 out of 5 stars Painless Install. Everything Works.   October 25, 2009

"Upgraded" Win7 RC1 by installing RTM over existing RC1 partition. This put the RC1 files in Windows.old folder after the installation, which took about 25 minutes. I migrated my user files via Windows Easy Transfer, which was also painless. Now I am able to delete the Windows.old folder.

Please note that this wasn't a real upgrade as I have to reinstall my programs. It's no big deal as I only have a few essential apps (Firefox, Zune, HJSplit, Microsoft Security Essentials, Trillian) which shouldn't take that long to reinstall. For those with more extensive apps, an in-place upgrade should be the preferred route.

Everything works so far including wireless networking, printer, and monitor/TV.

Satisfied user here.

4 out of 5 stars Should have been a free upgrade for Vista users   October 24, 2009

Sure, Windows 7 is an upgrade from Vista. But Vista was so flawed that Microsoft should have given all Vista purchasers a FREE upgrade to Windows 7. But as long as there are suckers willing to play the "upgrade game", that won't happen. Windows 8, anyone?

4 out of 5 stars Very happy, an easy and welcome upgrade   October 24, 2009

I have been running the Windows 7 beta and RC since they were released and have been very happy. My upgrade arrived on the 22nd and I had it installed in under an hour on an MSI Wind U100 Netbook... everything is running great. Windows found its device drivers without incident. The netbook seems snappier and more responsive than it was with Windows XP on it. My only complaint would be that I would like to have a family pack available in the Windows Professional flavor or at least the option to purchase some of the professional features separately. Final issue is cost, I bought this one for the $49 pre-order price... I'm not sure this is a necessary upgrade at $119 if you have Vista and it's working fine. Great upgrade from XP however for most users. One final word of caution, back everything up and do the custom install. Upgrading over your old OS can cause problems and slow things down... always best to do one of these as a clean install. Lots of instructions online on how to do this if you want a step-by-step guide.

Pro - Stable, attractive, easy to install, runs well on low power machines, easiest upgrade experience Microsoft has ever produced
Con - Price, no family pack for any flavor other than Home Premium

1 out of 5 stars Not about the customer   October 24, 2009

I"m no tech guy to start off but this is like any other Microsoft program, a disaster for the customer. Trying to install this on a Windows Vista computer and it's telling me to uninstall 10 things including my anti-virus before downloading. This is not about the customer. Then my other machine is an XP and you have to start from scratch. Too much work and the reward is not worth it. They need to take some pointers from Mac
