Win7 is so much better than vista which I used before. It is light and has nice features.

3 out of 5 stars A big barrel of -mostly- stupid   October 26, 2009

So anyone who is reading this who saw my original review will notice I had given it 1 start, implying it was horrific. I had said all Windows 7 has given me is shiny new cosmetic designs, and preview images of videos that show more than just a black screen if the video starts with a black screen.

I can't tell what positives it offers still, but it's still a nifty upgrade with a lot of nifty features over XP that make for a more fun experience for some, and a more organized experience involving navigating huge catacombs of archives and files.

Fixes from original review:

- I had mentioned a compatability issue. It turns out I was wrong. The program in question WAS compatible, and I have no idea what went wrong, but it works perfectly well. Windows 7 will openly tell you if any program is incompatible, but it will even let you run the program regardless. And sometimes the program will still work fine

- No idea what went wrong, but setting Windows Live Messenger as compatible for Windows XP allows me to minimize it to the system tray, and I can drag and drop files onto the conversation window. No luck on dragging the IM window without using the top menu bar.

But here are some of the MAJOR negatives:

- New taskbar system which takes a long time to adjust. It can be set to an XP standard, but you won't have the nifty QuickLaunch bar to the right of the Start button. What's worse, you apparently can't change the way windows are opened, so they move from Left to Right chronologically, with the newest window appears to the right of the taskbar. Different program types bunch their windows together, so all your IE windows will open separate from Firefox windows, regardless of when they were opened.

- You can't re-arrange how the start menu mainstays are arranged, so the "My Computer" will always be below the My Documents and My Pictures buttons.

Second Worse Egregious Offense
- User Access Control. Despite having four settings, in truth there are only two functions: Nag you about needing to be an Administrator to do a certain action, and always asking your permission to allow a program to "change" Windows or install itself, or even just open up, or never tell you about this at all with any program. More hilarity, or rather rage, occurs when you find that you, as not only the Administrator, but as the ONLY ACCOUNT ON YOUR WINDOWS USERLIST, are basically treated like a STANDARD account, but with the option of "Use Admin powers to skip this" which would undoubtedly confuse some people and they end up meekly obeying not being able to rename a certain folder or move a faulty DLL file.

There is no damn point to basically THREATENING us each time we want to alter a file or folder we did not personally create (such as a folder you import from another harddrive) by saying YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TOUCH THIS, but just in case you want to do so anyway, here's the "Continue" button with an Admin logo next to it. I'm not sure if you can turn this off.

The worst offense, though, is something so seemingly insignificant that it's mere inclusion cannot be logically attributed to ANYTHING but pure malice, or sheer stupidity:

- You cannot, Cannot, CANNOT move ANY file or folder manually.

Screw the desktop icons, because any time you ask about this, Windows personnel will IGNORE your issue and address DESKTOP arrangement.

Inside your folders, via Windows Explorer, you CANNOT manually arrange your files or folders. You can only auto-arrange them.

So for example, if you have folders with records arranged by month and year, like "Jan 2003, Feb 2003 - - - Jan 2009, Feb 2009" etcetera, you will NOT be able to arrange them in chronological order, unless you somehow manage to find SOME item in the auto-arrange list that lets you do this, but the list is so incoherent and long that trial and error would be a torturous affair in itself.

There is absoltuely NO benefit whatsoever to disabling the ability to manually move files about. What makes this even worse in terms of sheer stupidity or pure evil is that YOU CAN MANUALLY MOVE FILES ON THE DESKTOP! BUT NOWHERE ELSE!

There is no logic to that. That is sheer wallbanging stupidity that could only have been the result of mental illness, mental impairment, or deliberate evil.

1 out of 5 stars Crashes more than Vista!!   October 26, 2009

Just downloaded it two days ago-upgrading my Dell from Vista to Windows 7. The features are clearly much better...however, websites are crashing on me, and the system is crashing on me (including my MS Word, Powerpoint and MS Excel 2007)--what? You've got to be kidding me, even the MSFT programs are crashing on this new OS! My PC is not underpowered at all, and this just shouldn't be happening. Windows 7 was either put out too early, or it's just another crappy OS that has different issues than Vista. I have one key program that I need to access and it doesn't work on Mac's, otherwise I'd definitely switch wholesale. I can't believe the glowing reviews that this is receiving...how can a company that big, with that much money and access to top notch programmers come up with such a poor product. Take my advice, don't pay for this until MSFT irons out the problems...if they ever do.

1 out of 5 stars A slug, just like Vista   October 26, 2009

One can turn off the nag warnings of Vista, but default beep sounds are just awful, and System DOES NOT run any faster than Vista. And this on a Core 2 Duo PC with 6 Gigs of RAM. Control Panels were rearranged for no good purpose. May take it off and install Windows XP if I can't find some web sites with good hints for speeding up this SLUG. The one book I might buy to help... "Windows 7, The Missing Manual" is missing, now not due out until January, although O'Reilly the publisher on their web site still falsely lists it as November.

5 out of 5 stars Solid OS   October 26, 2009

I have a gaming laptop and was using Vista 32 bit. Its performance was mediocre and the system had some internet issues. I upgraded to Windows 7 64 bit without any problems. I just did a clean install and backed up my old files. Now Window 7 runs smoothly, 10-20% faster overall. Windows 7 is a streamlined version of windows vista. Essentially they got rid of all the junk. So far, I am loving this OS.
