5 out of 5 stars Good job Microsoft!   November 10, 2009

I upgraded from my 32-bit Vista Home Premium to this without issue at all. Yes you have to do a custom install which means you will have to re-install all your programs, but that is the way I would prefer it, a nice clean install to start fresh with. I installed the 64-bit version without issue.

Install was a breeze and surprisingly it kept all my old data! in a folder called window.old - i had a made a backup of all my programs and files prior to installing so this was a nice surprise, I just had to move my pics documents and folders to their new place, then delete the stuff I don't need. It even keeps the program folders so I was able to look up some serial numbers. All in the all the upgrade process was fairly quick with no issues!

After it got installed it loaded up VERY quickly, I have done several restarts while installing software and every time it is very quick.

Once it loaded up I was very pleased with the new interface, while it has alot of vista features, it adds alot of new ones, the interaction with windows and the desktop is spot-on and very easy to use, while some would compare it to the OSX bar, I think it is better. You just hover over a program and you can see every window that is open, this is very handy as I multitask a lot and constantly have many programs and windows open. Overall the new interface is killer and the best one windows has ever came out with.

I have installed all my programs and peripherals without issue and they all work, I went to a couple mfg. websites and windows 7 drivers were readily available.

The OS is just faster overall and cleaner.. it "feels" lightweight, and is definitely faster.

Overall, if you have vista, definitely upgrade, and if you still have XP, have no fear this one delivers, + it has XP mode if you ever need to use it!

4 out of 5 stars It Works!!! Simple, quick, and worth the upgrade!!   November 10, 2009

After complaining about Vista for the past 2 years, all I wanted was a functional PC. Timely start, timely shut down, quickly access and go between applications, work with my peripherals, don't freeze in sleep mode, don't freeze when working with Adobe products. Windows 7 delivered. I own both MACs and PCs, and this OS brings the PC very close to MAC functionality. The beauty is in the simplicity and speed of the functionality. I have run 7 for the last 3 weeks and don't have a single complaint. Shocking.

I would have given the software 5 stars, but 5 stars should be something that blows your mind. I would say that Windows 7 went for a solid ground hit and scored. Ideally this is all I was looking for in the first place. Get the basics right and then build from here. I can't believe I'm saying this, but it looked like MS actually listened to their users.

Windows 7 won't impress a MAC user. It just reduces the wide gap in functionality and experience that existed during the Vista and XP eras.

To support the other reviewers comments, the upgrade is a little cumbersome. Took me about 7 hours all told from Vista Business 32, but I have already regained that time in the speed of the system after the upgrade. Be sure to back up you hard drive and keep copies of your other software. Not everything transitions and you may have to reload a couple items. I will give them credit though, the upgrade software leads you through the process and clearly sets expectations well for what will and won't work post upgrade. If your PC has inherent credential functionality, this will need to be disabled. That was the only main pain in the process.

You got me Microsoft. Trying to upgrade both windows and my hard drive at the same time without going through the 4 hour process of loading my old copy of windows onto the new drive. What was I thinking. That would be pirating, or something? Thank you for not allowing me to do such a rational thing Microsoft, and saving me from falling into a life of crime. I don't know what would have been next for me on my descent into chaos - meth lab, pulling the tags off my mattress. No wonder Apple is such a flash in the pan.

1 out of 5 stars Isn't this supposed to be free for VIsta users?   November 10, 2009

I heard that Microsoft was giving Vista users a break on the price... what happened?

What a nice change, at first Windows 7 struck me that it might not be what I'm looking for, but today I think it's great.

I made sure I had the latest drivers on my Vista machine before I started the upgrade. It completed an hour later without a single hitch and very little interaction from me.

Windows 7 is a great upgrade and includes all of the fixes that everybody wanted. I have nothing bad to say. Everything works and I will be putting the the windows XP virtual machine from Microsoft on it today.

One thing that struck me about Windows 7 is the fast boot, and how fast windows runs compared to Vista.

Get used to windows 7 and enjoy. two thumbs up from me!
