5 out of 5 stars Excellent Job Mircosoft Way to Bounce Back.....Check Your Compatibility Before Purchase   October 27, 2009

For people that want to get Windows 7 please know that Ultimate is the only version that you can upgrade to without losing your data and doing a clean update. If you buy Pro Upgrade you need the full version. People please stop complaining saying that this is a failure just because you cant read the instructions and check to see if you computer is capable with the upgrade you have purchased. Miscrosft has put out many Advisors that test to see if your computer is able to use the upgrade. i havent seen any flaws with it. To all the future buys of Windows 7 Pro just pay the extra 20 bucks and get ultimate. The only difference between this one and ultimate is that you can encrypt your HDD's and Thumb drives (which is a major plus if you lost then or they get stolen) ad you can work in 35 differnet languages. Save your money and the hassle of paying more for the full version and just but Ultimate.

2 out of 5 stars Disheartening   October 27, 2009

At the moment Vista Home Premium is running on my PC and several others in my family, all preinstalled by the manufacturer. I pre-ordered Windows 7 Professional upgrades for each back when they were being offered for a big discount. Today the W7 upgrades arrived and only then did I discover - as apparently many others have too - that "upgrading" from Vista Home Premium to W7 Pro actually requires a "clean install" instead of an in-place upgrade, necessitating a LOT of manual work to save the data from each, install W7, and then MANUALLY REINSTALL ALL APPLICATIONS as well as the data. And for some bizarre reason known only to Microsoft, this rude surprise only applies to certain combinations of upgrades.

Printed on the box:
"This version of Windows 7 is designed as an upgrade to Windows Vista. If you are upgrading from Windows XP, you will need to back up your files and settings, perform a clean install, and then re-install your existing files, settings, and programs."

OK, so they make it clear that you have your work cut out for you if you are upgrading from XP, but upgrading from Vista should be - well - an upgrade. But it is not, except for a few very specific versions of Vista. See the Microsoft site for the few lucky cases.

This restriction makes no apparent sense, especially since I am upgrading to a "better" version of Windows, and I can find no explanation from Microsoft. I find it most disheartening to say the least, because it will require hours and hours of work that I was not expecting - and that assumes that I can even find all of the install disks and downloads, plus be able to recreate all of the configurations and customizations.

I am reasonably computer literate so I expect that I will be able to get through this onerous task - eventually - but there is no way on this planet that my wife would be able to do this by herself, and she will not be alone.

Die-hard computer hobbyists who don't mind spending endless hours just tinkering with their computers to make them work to the pinnacle of perfection might find doing a clean install to their liking, but I do not. I have a computer because it is a tool to accomplish work other than maintaining the tool itself.

I hope that some day the pain of my having to do multiple clean installs of W7 on my family's computers will all be the past, but for now it remains in the future, and I do not know for how long because I will only be able to do it when I have many hours available during which I have nothing else to do and during which time I can afford to have my computer down. And of course, nothing will go wrong in the process. Thank goodness cars don't work this way!

I am very, very disappointed in both Microsoft and Amazon for not mentioning this little detail amidst all of the glow about the benefits of W7, and I strongly recommend to those who are contemplating purchasing the W7 Professional "Upgrade" to now be aware of this inexplicable hole in the Windows upgrade matrix and seriously consider whether you have the knowledge, time and patience necessary to deal with this.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best $98 I have ever spent   October 26, 2009

Experience Summary:
1. I have sent in an order for "Windows 7 Professional Upgrade" to [...] for $[...] about two months ago. The order arrived in the morning of 10/22.
2. I installed the upgrade on my Sony VAIO (VGN-SZ780) laptop over Vista Business (SP3) on 10/23 with no major problem.
3. I have noticed the following application performance improvement:
Application Vista Start-up Time Win7 Start-up Time
Outlook 2007 ~10s ~5 s
Internet Explorer 8 ~8s ~3s (Best effort in performance tuning by MS)
Firefox 3.5.3 ~7s ~5s
Real Video Player ~10s to play ~4s to play
Citrix GoToMeeting ~10s ~6s (No more Java Run-time version issues)
Apple iTunes 9.0.1.8 ~15s ~5s (This is really surprising!)
4. On Vista, I couldn't get simultaneous dual screen display (Notebook screen & 23" LCD screen) to work in any resolutions. On Win7, it suddenly works with maximum supported resolutions on both screens.
5. On Vista, most Microsoft Office 2007 applications (Words, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) always pop up one extra empty Window pane underneath the Windows that displays the opened file. On Win7, that annoying problem simply disappears.

All and all, I'm VERY impressed. Great job Microsoft & please keep it up. The whole world (at least 95% of computer users) still needs you to deliver a quantum-jump of performance improvement over Win7 in Win8, just to compensate for the $T (and millions of person-years) of loss endured in the last 10 years.

Thank you.

1 out of 5 stars Windows 7 CRAP!   October 26, 2009

One Word to describe Windows 7 - CRAP!

PROS -
You can open Photos! So.
You can surf the internet. So.
You can listen to Music. So.
You can watch videos. So.
You can view files you have. So..
Most importantly you can get emails. SO!

CONS -
It is a waste of money.
It is a waste of time.
It is Vista all over again.

Get ready for years of bugs, unstable crashing, security risks, and non-stop updates for the rest of your life with Windows 7.

XP is still the king of ALL operating systems PERIOD! It was the most stable OS Microsoft ever came out with TO DATE!

Windows 7..... CRAP!!!

4 out of 5 stars So Far, So Good   October 26, 2009

It is hard to review Win 7 after only a few days, but things are looking pretty good right now. I upgraded to Pro from Vista Home Premium, so I had to do a clean install. So, on the clean install . . . .

First, I WANT to do a clean install when upgrading my operating system. I want a clean start, not a patch job from an old OS. I downloaded and ran Windows 7 Update Advisor, so I knew I had to back up files and reinstall programs. Fine. Good. I want a good, clean start. All my "user" files (i.e., documents, music, photos, and other files under my user directory) were automatically backed up into a "windows.old" direcctory, so I did not even have to copy those back over. Other than restoring some additional backups and reinstalling some programs, the install was fairly easy and painless.

Second, as I mentioned, do not be surprised when you have to do a clean install. If you haven't run Update Advisor, DO SO. It gives you some very good advice on what will happen and what you should do to optimize your experience.

I was never a Vista fan. Vista is a pig and somewhat shoddy, and it always has felt like it. It has some great advances, but it has always been at least as much trouble as it was advanced. Windows 7 feel lean and robust. Of course, it takes a little getting used to, and it annoys me to no end that the designers have to change some things just for the sake of changing things, but Windows 7 feels less like a new product and more like a refinment. As someone who jealously guarded his XP desktop while suffering through a Vista laptop, I am impressed and (so far) fairly pleased.
