5 out of 5 stars BEST GAME EVER   July 12, 2009
I love this game so much. Its the BEST GAME EVER. You can learn 60 insruments. I Learned alot about playing insruments. I couldnt keep track of time but when I asked my mom she said I played for 3 hours. I created 15 videos that you can create. The Mistro teaches you 4 insuments. And then you can pick from 5 songs and play it. Then you have the option to make it into a video you give it popularity points and pick a backround an frame it (optinal) and drag you and your tweets over to where you want. Or if you did a solo it won't show the tweets. This game is my all time favorite out of all 10 of my wii games. Hope my review was helpful. ENJOY YOUR GAME!!!!!!!!:):)

5 out of 5 stars This game is hilarious!   July 12, 2009
Pikmin (Allentown, PA)
This game is hilarious! I am writing this review after two hours of playing for the first time.
(1) In the "conductor" mode, you're expected to waive the baton to conduct an orchestra. The music seems simple, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, but it was arranged beautifully. The woodwind begins quietly then strings take over. Keep on waiving your baton, or if you stop, the musicians give you a strange look. The tune continues with brass, rapid string counter melody, and ends with alternating timpani and a cymbal blast. The second orchestra piece is Carmen, which can be played fast-slow-fast with a dramatic ending.
(2) In the jam session, you choose the musical instrument, song, style (pop, calypso, March, Hawaiian, etc) and whether you want to be the melody, bass, harmony, or percussions. There are numerous instruments to select but there four basic ways to control or "play" them: piano control, guitar control, violin control and trumpet control.
(3) In the improvisation mode, you just pick the instrument and start playing. The computer will help you with the accompaniments such as bass and drums. The melody seems to be random notes matching simple chord progressions in minor or major key. To make more fun, certain buttons add more functionality to the game depending on the musical instruments. For example, when you play guitar, use button C to play a chord, instead of a single note. When playing recorder, press B to make a trill (trill is a technique to produce two quick repeated notes).
(4) The video mode enables you to record your performance and share it with your Wii friends. The game comes with four prerecorded video clips from the factory.
(5) Pitch Perfect is a fun game to test your hearing and pitch recognition. For example, you are asked to arrange the Miis playing low note to high note, or you have to select two Miis playing a harmony among three Miis on the screen.

Conclusion: unlike other game which emphasizes pressing color coded buttons, this game is more on the musical side. The song selections are mostly public domain music and not as many as Guitar Hero because it is not necessary to have hundred of music library to enjoy music. A simple repertoire like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star can be arranged in limitless ways as long as you're creative. Even Mozart created a variation of this popular French tune.

3 out of 5 stars What I expected, but some of the features are lacking.   July 8, 2009

The concept of the game is great--a way to learn about different instruments and play them in different songs. However, the execution is not as good as it could be. There is no technique required at all in order to play the songs except a basic concept of rhythm. Sounds great, right? Wrong! Because of this, there is no way to elaborate on melodies or even know what is coming um in an unfamiliar melody. In an attempt to "solve" this, Nintendo provides a "melody guide" (I believe that is what it is called). However, it is still a vague idea of what it should be. In reality, it would be best if they provided a staff-type system to show you when the music goes up and down. Also, no background/information is given on any of the instruments. It would be nice if something were given other than "how to play it." Finally, the games. The mini-games seemed like a last-minute addition to me. They are good concepts--handbells, conducting, and a basic music quiz. However, the execution is once again relatively poor. As a classically trained handbell player, the use of proper handbell technique on this game makes your score worse sometimes! In addition, using proper conducting technique on the conducting game provides disastrous results. The game expects you to move your arm up-and-down, up-and-down, but this is quite frustrating. In addition, it is impossible to subdivide the tempo when the music calls for it. In addition, in both the handbell and the conducting game, there are only four or five songs available to play. This is quite frustrating as the songs are quite boring after awhile.

Despite all this, the game is pretty fun. It is fun to pick the different instruments for the different songs and to play them, and unlocking a certain instrument or a new song. And the different environments of the music videos that you can chose from are neat.

So, for someone who is untrained or doesn't care as much, this is a neat little game, but for a classically trained musician or someone who is expecting a lot of features, don't be disappointed when this game does not meet your expectations.

5 out of 5 stars Great for kids!   June 19, 2009

I originally got this game without knowing how simplistic it was. I, personally, would have liked something a bit more difficult. I'm not going to rehash what's said in a lot of the other reviews about game play, etc.

What really struck me is how great it has been for my nephew. He's 5-years-old and has Downs. After playing a few times, he does it on his own and knows which instruments he has to strum and which he has to push buttons to blow horns. Its been fun for him and I think beneficial for his motor skills. He especially loves the dog suit, cat suit, and cheerleader instruments. He goes crazy with the dancing around. Rock on little man!
