4 out of 5 stars Nintendo Could've Done Better   November 19, 2008

Being a huge fan (HUGE FAN) of the Animal Crossing series, you probably couldn't even imagine how excited I was for CityFolk to come out. I even pre-ordered it. I got my game today from Amazon, I'm not here to complain about the price (which I could've made a good argument for) but the quality of the game. I noticed from the start it combined Wild World and the original one on Gamecube (I know there's one on N64) They had all the old job chores that they did in the Gamecube, and Rover's reappeared and is on the bus everytime you take to the city (which can get frequently annoying). But there are some pros aside from the cons, they made fishing addictive for me by taking full use of the Wii-mote instead of pressing a button you can just shake it (which I love and bought a fishing rode first day for), also the City (I haven't been to all the stores yet) but I like how they have Katrina the Fortunant Teller there and Crazy Redd's so you don't have to wonder "When's the next time Crazy Redd's coming to town...?" Or something like that. But another con I noticed is there is a small time to wait, which was never like that in the other two games which I was fairly disapointed in.

Bottom line is, for fans like me you'll find nothing much has changed, yet you'll be pleased with it if you like Animal Crossing (because hey it's Animal Crossing)for new players, you're in for a awesome experiance.

2 out of 5 stars How many times can Nintendo release the same game?!?   November 17, 2008

I love the AC series, and I owned the other 2 games. I anticipated this one since the Wii was released; have been very excited to see what new things are in store. There really aren't any, so far. The game is fun, and if you do not own the DS one and like the premise, it is probably a safe buy. If you have played Wild World, however, do not waste your money. The city that you can travel to is the main addition - it basically consists of things that were in the last game like the hairdresser, fashion shop, etc. The game has the same main characters including the turtle mayor, Nook, the bird at Town Hall. They seem to say the same things and the tasks are the same as the other games - you have to plant flowers/trees for Nook before you can shop there, shake trees for fruit, dig for fossils, make deliveries, etc. I haven't played long, but all of the items and fossils I have found so far have been in the other games. There is nothing I can see that is truly novel here. The first AC for Gamecube had the NES games you could find and play - this was a big drawing point for the game but I doubt they're here since they are sold on the Wii Shop now. I cannot believe I payed $50 for this. I have been a big Nintendo fan since the early NES days; Nintendo has finally p@#sed me off and I do not think I will ever buy another Nintendo product again.

3 out of 5 stars More of the same   November 17, 2008

While the Animal Crossing series is amazing for it's relaxing gameplay and customization options, it also seems mired in the been there-done that category.

Nintendo seems reluctant to really shake the series up or add anything noticably new or exciting. They just add new ways to do old things. While there are a few new design patterns and animal neighbor characters in City Folk, there's just as many that have vanished for no apparent reason. The New Mii makeover is the best part about the new game easily, the Mii heads even have animations and work with the emotions you learn. Sadly, they can't wear any headgear or accessories.

The bottom line is City Folk is definitely the best of the Animal Crossing games out there but only barely and there's just not enough new additions to bring back previous players unless you're a relatively die-hard fan.

5 out of 5 stars First impressions---Is this a NEW game? And is that good or bad?   November 17, 2008

Anyone who knows Animal Crossing knows it's hard to really rate the game until you have played for a year or so, but I thought some people might like to hear some first impressions from a huge AC fan of the latest game!

My BIG first impression---very little seems to have changed. This game seems like a real cross between the Gamecube version and the DS version, both of which used up many hours of my time! The setup of the city is a LOT like the Gamecube version. The town have the same feel, with lots of slopes and rivers and the same somewhat tiring to get around town plan. Tom Nook, the Able sisters, Pelly, all are there in stores that look about the same. Blathers is even MORE long winded, and it's just as long a routine to get a fossil identified. It sounds like I'm complaining, but I'm not really, it's the AC I know and love. You have to go through the same internship with Tom Nook, and do even the exact same tasks you always have, and the first payment on the house is even just the same amount!

You DO get to pick your house, though, from four around town. You don't share a house, and they aren't all in a square. I picked a house on the beach, for easy fishing.

I bought a shovel and a fishing rod. Shoveling up things is the same, fishing seems initially a little easier---and yes,my first fish was indeed a Sea Bass!

The animals I visited all had furniture I recognized---modern black and white, cabin themes, etc. The animals were also about half ones I've had before, including Ruby, who I think has been in every town I've virtually lived in!

A few things I did notice---the sound was noticably better. One resident, Reuben, had a scary sort of voice, and it was really echoey and cool. The tops for sale at Able's and the designs on display were impressive---they looked a lot more detailed than previously.

I know at some point I will be able to take a bus to the city---I haven't yet---and I know as I go along I will find a lot more changes (I hope) but for now, I feel like I'm returning to a town I know well. I love Animal Crossing, and I will be happy even if there doesn't turn out to be much new. If you love AC too, buy this. If you have never tried AC, you are in for a treat---BUY IT! If you didn't like the first 2 versions but thought this one might be different---well....maybe wait and see!
