Well worth your time! August 31, 2009 A. Hilton (Katy, TX United States) Well worth your time. Puzzles vary from easy to challenging. Story is interesting and graphics are good. Looking forward to their next Professor Layton game.
Definitely in my Top 10 DS Games August 29, 2009 Hikaru811 (San Mateo, CA) Professor Layton is a fantastic game - it's one of the few DS games that has a really great story to go along with it. If you like puzzles and brainteasers, this game features puzzles that vary from fairly easy to the downright difficult. No matter how frustrating some of the puzzles were, I always came back to play more. Not much replay value, for once you get all the puzzles it's pretty much over - although it is fun to go back and get a perfect score on everything.
The animation and hand-drawn look of this game is really great - it reminds me of a combination of the Triplets of Belleville and Hayao Miyazaki. I also loved the music they played throughout the game - very delightful.
This is definitely a game to have in your DS collection - and if you enjoy this one, definitely check out its sequel: Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box!
Excellent puzzle game August 26, 2009 David Foster I haven't seen such a good computer-based puzzle game since System's Twilight. (Although most readers are probably unfamiliar with that game.) Professor Layton really focuses on the puzzles above all else (except perhaps the storyline), so if you're looking for action, this game isn't for you. Puzzles can be completed in any order and it's not required that you complete all of them to finish the game.
I wish I could compare this game to Myst, one of my other favorite puzzle games of all time. But the comparison doesn't really lend itself, as the puzzles in Myst aren't as obvious and you have to be more self-motivated to complete the game. (Actually the hardest puzzle in Myst was determining what the true objective in the game was.)
Another nice touch which extends the game's lifetime are weekly puzzles that you can download over a WiFi connection.
Captivating Animations and Puzzles Make for a Great Game August 20, 2009 Maggie Gilmore (Wichita, KS USA) I'm sure all of the positive reviews of this lovely game are more than enough to convince anyone to purchase Professor Layton and the Curious Village but I still wanted to add my two cents on what has been my favorite DS game purchase to date. Besides the puzzles being addictive-ly fun and often quite difficult, though I'm very dim when it comes to the math problems and am always amazed at the embarrassingly simple answers, the animation, voice acting and storyline were what just plain charmed the pants off me! I felt like I was watching a wonderful, quirky anime in between puzzles with a victorian twist to it and the characters and town combined to make a really enchanting and compelling play. I rarely finish games, generally due to boredom, and I lost sleep as I huddled over my DS into the wee hours of the morning just doing 'one more puzzle' and finished within a week of purchasing it. The relatively short play-time may be a negative to some but if you can stand to put it down, doing one puzzle here and there would extend the hours immensely.
Great game for all August 16, 2009 m.j. smith (trinidad, wi) Professor layton and the curios village is by far my favorite game for the nintendo DS. I am extremely picky with the games that I buy but when I heard about this game i bought it as soon as I saw it, not on sale. I started the game and was immediately charmed by the animation style. The story plot centers around an english gentle man and his apprentice called luke as they are invited to solve a mystery for lady Daliah in the 'Curious Village'. The game is not a mystery solving game but more of a puzzle solving game. Almost immediately you begin to solve puzzles given to you by the various residents of the village. The puzzles range from very easy to very hard, some are hidden and some are out in the open, but they are all fun. But, don't fear as around the game hint coins can be found, which you use to purchase hints of course to help you with the tougher puzzles. These coins are found by touching the backgrounds of the game and if you touch the right areas hint coins are found. The game is broken up by mini movies which are both fun to look at and charming. The game has bonuses which are unlocked using picarats, picarats are earned by solving puzzlesand the goal is to solve the puzzle on the first try so that you earn as many picarats as possible. The game alao has a feature where you can download extra puzzles using the wi-fi ds feature. all min all if you are more of a mystery lover than a puzzle solver this game may not be for you but , puzzle lovers everywhere and even those people who may just be loking for a fun game will definately love this amazingly different game. Try it!
