Meh. August 5, 2009 Lincoln V. Webbeking (Seattle, WA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Not much to say. Couldn't really get into it. Nowhere near as good as, say, Medieval Total War, when it comes to overall strategy and actual battles. Nowhere near as good as, say, StarCraft when it comes to real-time strategy. Nowhere near as good as any of the Civilization games when it comes to developing a civilization. It's basically so-so on all fronts. I can't handle newer games on my ancient PC, so I can't compare it to things like WarCraft.
Widescreen users beware! June 18, 2009 Jesse D (Minnesota) 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
OK, I understand this is an old game but why couldn't Microsoft make a simple patch to allow widescreen support or at least the ability to run the game in a window?! They really should have done this when they re-released the game.
The classic real time strategy games June 12, 2009 Mr. Jones 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This product is published by the XPLOSIV label, which is a sort of budget label that specializes in re-releasing old games. You get three discs - one is the Age of Empires Gold Edition, the second is the Age of Kings (Age of Empires II), and the third is the Conquerors expansion for the Age of Kings. Age of Empires is a game that helped launch the real time strategy genre and is still very fun to this day. Age of Kings is a definite improvement, but suffers from some historical inaccuracy that could have easily been fixed and is quite jarring if you are familiar with the civilizations of the time (for example, the Saracen civilization has priests instead of Imams - and don't even get me started on the Asian people!). The first still is charming because you are playing from the stone age to the founding of Rome. Both are excellent and any fan of computer games should definitely play these games at least once.
