4 out of 5 stars For the best in portable gaming, go lite!   July 21, 2009

You have to hand it to Nintendo; they have successfully cornered the video game market, both with the mammoth-selling Wii console and the DS, their newest portable system. I held off on buying the DS when it first came out because I disliked the bulky design, but the DS Lite totally caught my attention. Having gotten one for Christmas and playing it frequently, I can easily say that this is one of the best systems on the market, and easily the best portable system you can buy. Below is my review, done in the usual "pro and con" style.

Pros:

1. Excellent selection of games. Games like "New Super Mario Brothers", "Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass", "Metriod Prime Hunters" and "Mario Kart Wii" are the reason that many people bought a DS. Nintendo really delivers with their franchises, but the DS has a better selection of quality third-party titles than the Wii. I am a big RPG fan and there are several great ones available for this system, but there are also plenty of great shooters, strategy and platformer games available as well. I am not a fan of the "lifestyle" games like "Brain Age" that they are pushing, but more on that later.

2. Solid design. The DS Lite has a much more intuitive design that is comfortable to hold and play on for a few hours. The build of the system also feels solid, and believe me, it can withstand being dropped quite a few times. I can admit that I am clumsy and prone to dropping things.

3. The touch screen adds more depth and a new element of playability to the games. Surprisingly, games that require the stylus to move the character on screen play extremely well, and multi-tasking with two screens is not nearly as cumbersome as some would expect. I personally like having the two screens and I have no problem following both.

4. Great battery life. I am usually able to get 10 hours (or more) of gameplay on a single charge, which is substantially more than the PSP and even the Gameboy Advance.

5. Backwards compatibility with the Gameboy Advance. I own a lot of GBA games and it's nice to be able to play them on a new system, although you do not benefit from any of the features of the DS.

Cons:

1. Abundance of "Lifestyle" games. I have to give Nintendo props for pitching their products to a wider demographic, but I feel that the game market is crowded with brain and coaching games, so much that it makes finding some of the games I like harder. Why is it that the Castlevania games on the DS go out of print so quickly while games like "My Cooking Coach" and "Big Brain Academy" are in plentiful supply? It seems that Nintendo puts more money into maketing it's shovelware titles than it does others, and it's a pet peeve for a lot of DS owners.

2. The cartridge based games are unable to have the same quality of graphics and sound as the PSP. But hey, I would rather have a great game with mediocre graphics rather than vice versa.

3. Lack of quality internet browser. Online play on the DS is a pain at the best of times, but don't even think of using the web browser that the DS offers. It's crippled and totally archaic by even the most basic standards.

4. The touch screen is easily damaged, especially if you own a lot of games that use the touch screen and stylus pen as the main method of control. The key to avoiding this is to use the stylus in light and sweeping strokes as opposed to banging the tip on the screen. Buying a good quality screen protector, available anywhere from a variety of third party companies, is also recommended.

I also own a PSP, which is better for racing and 3D platforming games, but I play my DS a lot more often. There are so many great games and more on the way, so I love the system despite the reputation it has for being a "kiddy console" or (similar to the Wii) not a proper gaming console. As far as systems go, this one is going cheap, so there is no reason to not buy one if you have been considering it.

5 out of 5 stars I Can Take it Anywhere and it's Plenty Fun   July 19, 2009

This is my favorite little system ever. It's light weight and so entertaining. I can take it anywhere, on the plane, in school, wherever boredom arrives, I've got it covered. This is a great gift especially for teens and kids who have a lot of free time. It comes in a lot of different colors and is overall a pretty cool thing. The quality is great and the graphics are amazing. It's definitely worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Nintendo DS Lite   July 16, 2009

Great product. I have wanted one for a long time and took the time to research the difference between the lite and the new DSi. The cost wasn't too bad, although I didn't think about the fact that without buying a bundle pack or starter kit all you get is the game console and no games. I really like it, but it would be nice if it came with screen protectors.

4 out of 5 stars It's great, but...   July 15, 2009

The DS Lite has some well-known advantages against its old pal DS "brick", but if you gamers already noticed some bad things... Well, first the BIOS and software are the same as the DS "brick", nothing such new with that. But sth more important is that I had lots of fun with it, playing Mario Kart via Wi-Fi, kidding with New Super Mario Bros, etc. (Actually the DS belongs to my brother, but I always take it)

Great...
-Lighter
-Brighter
-Better touch response
-A bit more battery life
-A bit more Wi-Fi performance
-Better stylus
-The colors (anyone but the white). Ours--ahem, I mean, my bro's--is onyx black.
-Location of the Power sw, Start and Select buttons, indicators, and the MIC

But...
-You always do visible fingerprints on it (just kidding...imagine if there's a crime in which the DS Lite is part of the crime scence and such DS is yours... ha, Gotcha!)
-The buttons will decolorate faster
-Less sound power
-More fragile
-When you play GBA mode, the GBA cartidge doesn't fit all the way.

Well, anyway, it's almost the same as its old pal but surely better improved. If you like style get this, otherwise you know what to do.
