I love this tiny computer October 30, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have wanted to try Linux for years and finally bought this little ASUS EEE PC 900 because it comes with Linux and because it is tiny. Being able to use SD cards for storage is working well for me as I now have 1996 international folk songs on one 8 GB SD card and the computer easily plugs into our folk dance club's amplifier. The included media handling software has a wonderful search function that allows us to bring up dances by name, country, type, or source.
A problem for me has been the software and operating system that comes with this computer is so transparent and easy to use I haven't learned anything about Linux!
A second problem is that the computer seems to be sensitive to the order in which it is turned on and my DSL modem is turned on. Once I am connected it works perfectly on the Internet.
Right now the computer is mostly used as my MP3 and WAV player but the included Open Office seems to be very similar to MS Office.
As an added bonus it comes with the ability to create Chinese characters by typing in Pinyin.
Love the purchase AMAZING service from Amazon October 30, 2008 I purchased the Asus Eee because it is functional for documents, the internet and more. Although it is not the same as a regular well featured laptop which is was very much aware of, I am quite happy with it. Most of all, it's portable! It fits in my purse and I can take it with me anywhere! New shoes hurt and asus eee just needs getting used to and it doesn't really take too long.
Lastly, amazon's amazing customer support made me calm at the thought of having an electronic item shipped. It got here on time and I will definitely be ordering my electronics (and more) through Amazon. I am now a certified loyal customer.
Thank you, Amazon!
Awesome! October 28, 2008 I had my eye on the eee pc since before the 701 was released. I was just about to buy one when the rumor on the street was that a newer one was about to hit the market. I'm glad I waited. The 900 is perfect. I don't think i would have been as happy with the smaller screen. I also chose the machine with the linux as I have been curious for years about that OS. So easy to use and the open office software lets you read, write and transfer documents to/from Microsoft Office and PDF files as well.
To be clear though, this isn't a laptop for high volumes of data processing. I have an IBM laptop as well as a desktop computer for that. But I have left the IBM at home when traveling and it is so much easier, smaller, and lighter. I highly recommend the 900 to all of you not doing a lot of typing but using your laptop to surf the net and keep in touch while on the the road.
In additon it has all the little things that you need...webcam, movie viewer, media player, games (tetris fans, look out!), SKYPE.
Battery life is to be expected with a 4-cell battery. This is a non-issue for me as I am rarley somewhere without an outlet. If I was it would because I am camping, skiing or canoeing and don't give a hoot about computing!
It comes with a black neoprene sleeve so save your money there.
Eee - Slick little machine October 24, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Got an Asus Eee 900 with Linux/Open Office. Originally to use for myself to check e-mail etc., because the one family PC wasn't enough for all of us (4 students). I really like this little thing. My youngest daughter uses it to learn to type, and to submit her homeschool lessons on-line. I am using it to finish my on-line college degree, and e-mail type things. If you don't mind the small size, I think it can do just about what you want it to, and it is easy to carry around. I don't care about MP3 and that type of thing, so it isn't clogged with junk like that. Keeps up with what I am doing without having to kick anyone off the home PC. Have had it for about a month, so far, so good.
Nice little laptop. Does what is says it does. October 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this system as something to learn Linux on, and as a light alternative to my laptop so I can carry something around on the train without breaking my back.
The battery life on the unit is great. The screen is nice and bright. It's easy to both read text/info, and watch movies on. The wireless worked fine out of the box, and I was able to find and connect to networks wherever I took the thing (Did I mention that the battery life on this thing is great? I have been able to use it for upwards of 4 hours without plugging in).
I love the fact that even though the system comes with Linux, it comes with a CD full of Windows drivers so that you don't have to hunt and peck for them to get it working.
I was not a big fan of the OS the system came with. It's a little on the dumbed-down side, but I can see where it would be good for a person who bought this just for browsing the internet and doing a few tasks well.
For more advanced users, a quick search on the internet found a disto of Ubuntu linux made just for these things that ROCKS! It's easy to install and works like a charm with the hardware.
The only downsides I have found are the OS which I mentioned, and a small tendancy towards lag if you are doing several things at once. I would expect that from a system like this as it is not anywhere near as powerful as a full blown laptop.
Oh, one last thing. If you are a guy, and you know how to touch type, this unit may drive you a little buggy at first. The keyboard is not meant for bigger fingers. I find myself typing faster with the hunt-and-peck method.
Overall I am very happy with the unit. It was a great buy.
