Flip is simple to operate, good quality, and great value! November 18, 2009 Diane M. Dugan (Syracuse, NY) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Flip UltraHD is well worth it!!!!!!!!! It's simple operating features make taking video fun and easy. Video's or still photos can be put together with easy to use flip software. This video camera is so compact, it can be placed in your pocket. The 120 minutes of video is more than sufficient. The battery holding charge is good, and you can use regular batteries if needed. There is also a convenient electrical outlet adapter charger available.
The Flip - Simple, with all the good and bad that comes with that November 17, 2009 T. Bannock (Springfield, MA United States) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Just got the Flip Ultra HD and filmed a video interview with a band after a concert, as well as some random stuff around the apartment.
The Good: This thing is dead simple to use, and the quality is really good, so you can't go wrong there. If you want to film something on the go, or use a tripod for some static shots, and then immediately combine some of the shots you take or just send them right along to YouTube or someone's email, you can't go wrong.
The Bad: The software sucks if you want to do anything other than above. Not only that, but if you play around with the videos before deciding what you want to do with them (pull them off the Flip and put 'em on your harddrive; try to edit in another program; etc.) good luck to you, because you've just screwed the pooch. The Flip stops recognizing its own videos. The software can do almost nothing in terms of editing beyond the aforementioned combining of videos. Getting the videos (.MP4 format) into other programs is often a hassle. The HD is enough to require a fairly up-to-date system in order to watch the videos smoothly and fool around with them.
Summary: The Flip's simple and fun. If you're a techy, you can probably figure out work arounds for the problems, and if you do so, then you've got a formidable portable camera. If you're not very technologically adept and you have in the whispers of a thought that you might want to do more than just combine two videos (what if a shot comes out slightly wrong, or a random sound screws up what you were going for, or any other number of issues that you want to edit out easily?), then avoid the Flip. There are other options that are more versatile than the Flip.
Helpful Tip: If you do like the Flip, download Google's Picassa. It may not be the best software ever, but it's got a leg up in some areas and is pretty easy to get the hang of, as well as being free. Personally, it's what I use currently, but I'll definitely be investing in something more robust in the near future. Picassa's a great starting point though, a hundred times better than the Flip's own software.
I regret buying this! November 16, 2009 J. Thompson (Dallas, TX, USA) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I bought this a couple of months ago and REALLY regret having done it. The rechargeable battery pack doesn't hold a charge - at all. Their customer support gave me a suggestion (even though it was charging) that didn't work in the slightest. It takes several hours to fully charge it. That part is disclosed. What's NOT disclosed is that within a few hours (being turned off the entire time) ALL of the charge is gone! You have to fully charge it (six + hours) and use it immediately! You can't charge it, turn it off, and take it with you to use later in the day.
The email from their customer support says, "however when the battery pack is fully charged it depletes within a few hours time." That part is NOT included in their product description. This was a total waste of $175. Now I'm reluctant to buy one from a different manufacturer. How do I know THEIRS doesn't disclose that it's a useless object?
What a rip-off! Give your money to charity... or buy a camcorder that someone you know personally can vouch for. This Ultra HD is terrible.
Small, portable, good bang for the buck November 15, 2009 Consumer (TX) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is my first digital so our last camera was an 8mm. The one before that was borrowed and the size of a suitcase for VHS, remember?
For inside YouTube and short films it will be great but the zoom makes it less than optimum for stuff like sporting events but I'm willing to give that up for the portability. My daughter golfs, so I can film the Tee shot close in-but distance fairway shots wont pick up details. I took my dad flying and he used it from the back seat. The quality was good but again, if you wanted details of something on the ground it would not zoom to your satisfaction.Cockpit pictures were good and the focus is good.
Unless I do not understand the software, when it's time to edit the film, (btw, everytime you stop filming it creates a film that is saved in backwords order so you have to inverse everything to create a "movie". that sucks.)you can only trim the end of the short film and not remove any of the middle.
Burning the "movie" created was a little cumbersome because they (Flip)want you to buy their product to burn movies.
Those are the complaints but I am overall happy with the product.
HD versus the NON HD November 15, 2009 P. Wilson (Phoenix, Arizona) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I first saw a Flip about a year and a half ago and HAD to have one, and purchased what then held an hour and required two batteries. Having been very prolific as a film maker with VHS in the - well, VHS days, and having had to stop once it all BROKE, the Flip opened new doors for me.
A few months later I got an email from Flip advertising the HD. TWO hours of recording time, HD quality, it sounded too good to be true, especially when Best Buy had two models, and the superior one was LESS (???). They were cool and let me trade in the old NON HD unit toward the HD unit and I paid the difference.
Quality was indeed great, sound was excellent - BUT
Loading these heavy files to Youtube was nightmarish, to say the least. I could not do it using the Flip software, as the sound was terrible once online, and even the Flip-Help folks admitted "they are working on that..." Instead I had to import the finished videos elsewhere on my computer, and upload from there. It was time consuming, and, though in HD, 9 times out of 10 they were OUT OF SINC. All that time to upload it, and though the sound was CLEAN, it was out of sinc. They played fine on my computer, played fine when uploaded to Facebook, etc., but only on occasion to Youtube were they acceptable. TOO - and this is important - the "sharing" option was problematic - again, the sound was SO BAD on the recipient's end it was useless to try and email some quick little video to a pal. SO - in reverting BACK to the OLDER, inferior standard def model, I found it was SO MUCH BETTER. Sure, the picture is not QUITE as amazing, but for what I do and as quickly as I wish to "share" it, the little standard defs that take batteries are easier for me, and the video-emailing/sharing option a breeze, with little to no sound deterioration, and everything I upload to Youtube is in sinc and clean. I will hold on to the HD in the event Youtube or what have you is capable of handling the complex files these Flips create, but for now, it's back to square one!
