3 out of 5 stars Fun while it lasts, camera proves unreliable in the end   October 12, 2009
R. Caldwell (Raleigh, NC USA)
I really like my Mino HD. Sure it has it's faults. The microphone is subpar, the lens should be more wide-angle, etc., but for what it is, the Mino HD is a great little camera. However, I'm afraid Flip let this one out without enough testing. I've had random glitches and problems with it since day one. I constantly get a solid black screen for the first 15 seconds of recording, which is annoying because you have to guess what you're shooting. Now the camera has taken to freezing up every time I turn it on. I get a black screen with distorted red and blue lines running through it. The camera remains on and unresponsive until you reset it. Sometimes when I turn it on, I get a strange firmware info screen, then it freezes.

Fine, if you want this camera. It's got nice picture quality, and what it does, it does well. But know this ... the time will come, probably days from opening the box, when it will not work correctly. Sure, it's an inexpensive camera, but even for $200, I expect to get something that works more than 30 percent of the time. My Flip Mino HD does not. It is a very poorly-constructed, camera with glitchy firmware, that gives a lot of people random problems. Do a google search and you'll find similar complaints. I can generally get my camera to work, but it's not without some effort: resetting, turning it off and on again, waiting, resetting again, etc.

2 out of 5 stars Software is a disaster   October 12, 2009
WJ (Monterey, CA)
I received my Mino HD on October 3 and returned it to Amazon on October 5. I own an earlier Flip Video camcorder and I have been very satisfied with it. I bought the HD Mino to take on our upcoming trip to Europe and to stay with the miniature theme, I wanted to use it with my compact Acer Aspire Notebook. However, the newest software will not allow snapshots to be saved on this computer running Windows XP SP3 because the screen will not resize to allow the "Save" button at the bottom to be visible in order to click on it. The resize arrows just do not work. Tech support's answer was simply "Your system does not meet the minimum requirements..." and their solution was a very complicated process to transfer all of my videos back from my computer to the camcorder and attempt to load an earlier software version. It was so convoluted that I just gave up and returned the camera. Further, the clarity of the video images are sharp but man are they jerky. It was like watching the old silver screen movies before the "Talkies". I had high hopes for this camera but I was extremely disappointed.

it was cheap, but preforms at its max. no regrets dropping $200 here! the only thing i didnt like was that they gave you a composite video cable. WTF!

4 out of 5 stars Great camera for taking simple video   September 30, 2009

I have wanted one of these cameras for some time now, so I was very happy when I finally got my hands on it. Without a doubt the best part about this camera is the size. I'm able to keep it with me at all times, with the ability to pull it out and start recording in a split second. It's a wonderful tool for your basic snap shot needs. With it's HD video recording and simple mic I have been able to capture quite a few wonderful moments in all types of lighting and audio environments.

Although I love this product and would recommend it to anyone, I want to explain a few short comings. First off all, it's shaky. A camera of this size is close to impossible to keep still. Although your video and sound quality are superior to even the most sophisticated cell phones, you will still get the feeling that you are watching a video shot from the shaky lens of a cell phone. Although I have been able to mount the camera with a tripod. (it's size and weight make it very versatile on a mount or tripod.)

Second, the camera does not perform well in low light. In the bright light of day the camera picks up a beautiful array of color, but under performs at night.

Overall I would say that this is a great product in a new genera of video cameras. It will not replace the functionality of some higher end camcorders, but definitely beats out the video on your point and shoot still camera. It's so tiny that you can take it anywhere with you. It's simple to use, and is a good price.

Buy one.

1 out of 5 stars A bit disappointed   September 25, 2009

After researching this camcorder, I sided with the many people who gave it a good review. However, now that I have had the unit, I am very frustrated with several aspects. For the pros: the camera is small, easy to use, and very user friendly while you are taking video. The cons: The color was WAY OFF during playback on the computer. Things that were really red appeared to be blue (including some skin tones). Things that were white were a dirty shade of yellow / beige. Also, the playback itself was too choppy. It made people appear to be using robotic movements. Also, some of the recorded sound would be heard before the corresponding image would show up. I tried using different computers as well as different USB ports to make sure it wasn't my computer. I would not recommend this product if you are looking to capture videos that you want to keep around for a while (family celebrations, child's birthday, etc.)
