No problems. Decent price. Decent quality October 18, 2009 Eric S. Olstad (New Jersey, USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have nothing bad to say about these discs. I've burned plenty of videos to watch on my particularly finicky Sony DVD player and they have played just fine. In addition the $25 Samsung dual-layer burner I got from NewEgg has had no problem burning these at full 16x speed.
ImgBurn reports these as UME02 discs.
Other than that, these discs also include a protective coating on the label side of the disc to protect the foil. So you don't have to expect any of the foil chipping off like you do on some of the really cheap discs.
There's really not much else to say. The price is right. They work well and they're fairly durable.
CAVEAT EMPTOR -- WRITE SPEED MAX IS 4X October 17, 2009 Elliott K. Rand (Jacumba, CA) 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
Puzzled why my DVD writer suddenly reverts to 4X for writing
when using these DVD's and unable to get DVD speed info from Windows
I used the K3B program (from Linux) which displays write speeds
and it indicates the DVD maximum speed is 4X, which is NOT the
16X the DVD-R's are advertised as. To verify the problem, the
16X TDK and MEMOREX DVD's showed maximum write speed of 16X.
It would appear this item is not as advertised.
Caveat Emptor!!

2.5 Stars - Only Achieves 4x Write Speeds October 16, 2009 S M (California, USA) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
The Amazon basics 4.7 GB 16x DVD-R are a decent buy if you consider the price. The problem is that they do not write at the stated 16x speeds. I have used other discs such as Sony, Maxell, and even Office Depot branded DVD-R discs and all of them were able to write at their stated speed of 16x except for these Amazon branded discs which maxed at 4x. What this means is that it will take you between 2-4x as long to burn a disc.
*** Positive Points Include: ***
+ Low price for a 100 discs
+ Decent quality discs that burn without errors
*** Negative Points Include: ***
- Maxes at 4x burn speed not the stated 16x
- "frustration free" packing is not necessarily environmentally friendly because the box that was used to ship these was huge!
Overall: These are a decent buy for the money but I would expect Amazon to provide truth in advertising and either label these correctly as 4x discs or actually provide discs capable of 16x speeds!
Wonderful October 14, 2009 - Kasia S. (New York City) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Great way to save important pictures, music and for general backup, best part - the price...I used to burn things on dics all the time and finding a good deal was a lot tougher, this spindle is huge, I mean huge and under $20 bucks...amazing deal. Plus the space on them is adequate for most things and great way to save and organize vacation pictures...which one doesn't care for unless somehow they loose them!
"Frustration Free" Packaging Is A Relative Term October 14, 2009 Jeffrey N. Fritz (San Francisco, CA United States) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I hate plastic shrink wrap. And forget those nasty unopenable-without-instruments-of-destruction packages that come with some products today. And I take an immediate dislike to any product that takes me more than 30 seconds to pop out of its packaging. I buy them, but I dislike them until I free them from their plastic captivity. Therefore when I saw Amazon was offering AmazonBasics, a 4.7GB 16x DVD-R (100-Pack Spindle) in "Frustration-Free Packaging", I immediately ordered the item.
Let's face it, DVD-Rs are DVD-Rs. They have various write speeds (these are 16X), but essentially unless you purchase the premium long-life manufactured versions, they are essentially the same. Therefore, this review and the related rating are not so much about the DVD-Rs, which work fine, as they are about the so-called "Frustration-Free" packaging.
It's not exactly clear how this packing is frustration-free. It comes with a plastic wrap around the spindle, but that's not necessarily hard to remove. The spindle itself, however, feels somewhat flimsy and is not quite as easy to open as other DVD spindles that I own. It's not hard, it's just a little bit different and turns in a somewhat different manner. And it doesn't seem as reassuring when you close it. (With 100 DVD-Rs sitting in a stack a foot high on a spindle, you don't want them falling off on to your desk or floor anytime soon.)
My three-star rating isn't because I feel that the packaging is bad. It's fine. It's just that I expected so much more in something that claims to be "Frustration-Free Packaging." It should almost open itself. And this product does not.
