Watch for a sale... September 2, 2009 Matthew Williams (San Diego, CA) I purchased this when it was on sale for $50. I wanted a simple way to make impromptu memories with video, and this is certainly it. I don't think I'd pay the $229 retail price for it - in face, I know I wouldn't. If I intended to spend that much, I'd get the Mino or something with more memory. But if it's your first digital video recorder and you don't plan to do any crazy video editing, it's a good way to start - if you can get it at the right price.
Fipping Terrible September 2, 2009 Steven M. Grisham The camera itself is fine enough but the software is terrible. The upload (onto a computer running XP 2.8 processor, 3g ram) runs so slow it would take more than an hour to upload 50 minutes of video. I contacted Flip support for the issue. On the last call, the tech asked if I had 64 bit OS because that would cause a problem. I then advised I had 32 bit XP and she said, ya...that could be causing the problem - try and figure that one out, I can't.
My Flip works great for easy video fun but what good is my camera if I can't upload the video and if the company's tech support can't figure it out either...it's time to return it (and that's where I'm headed).
You're out of luck after 90 days August 25, 2009 A. Vittimberga (Orange County, CA) My daughter's Flip Ultra started to freeze in the "Flip" splash screen when turned on. I contacted Flip Video Support at Pure Digital Technologies. Here was their response:
"Thank you for your continued patience as we work to resolve your issue. Pure Digital warrants Flip Video camcorders for a period of 90 days from the date of purchase. As you are beyond the warranty period and our troubleshooting efforts have not allowed us to regain power on your camcorder, nor is your camcorder recognized by any computers, we are unable to further offer or suggest any means by which we can repair the camcorder or retrieve the videos; and our warranty policy does not allow for replacement of the camcorder after the 90 day warranty period. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused."
Wow! I knew it was out of warranty...But I expected that there was SOME way to have it repaired. Now we've got a nice little paperweight!
These things were once pretty unique, but now there are many alternatives. Beware of Flip!
Flippin' Batteries! August 25, 2009 The Mask Let me just say up-front that this Flip camcorder is enormous fun, and has proved itself capable of taking some great video under challenging circumstances. Just about the only thing that stopped me giving it five stars is its capacity for batteries. If you're thinking of buying one of this model Flip, invest in some high-capacity rechargeable batteries, and keep a spare set with you. Other than this minor niggle, it's an excellent product - so much so, I'm planning to buy one each for my children for Christmas!
