does everything a calculus student needs it to do! a little complicated to use but comes with a bible of an instruction booklet
Surprisingly easy to use calculator February 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this calculator and also got the TI-89 Dummies book because I was intimated by what I had seen from this calculator and expected it to be hard to get used to with a steep learning curve. Immediately after receiving it, I loaded the four *included* Duracell AAA batteries (I wish I had known they were included) and went straight to my Probability & Statistics class. Even without ever touching a graphing calculator before (I used to do all my Math with a Casio scientific calculator), the interface felt almost second nature to me, and I say "almost" because I had to ask a friend a few questions regarding the way it gave me certain answers.
I highly recommend getting the TI-89 Dummies book, because it has eased me greatly at figuring out how to do certain advanced calculations without having to research too much on them (the ~280 pages manual included is not particularly helpful sometimes). Finally, I also love how all the connectivity cables I'll ever need are already included (that's a TI to TI cable and an USB TI to PC one).
Excelent Product January 20, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have been working with the calculator for almost three weeks now. Its easy to use (compared to other graphing calculators such as the hp), and has many useful functions. Its ideal for al the calculus courses in engineering.
Texas Instruments TI-89 Titanium Graphing Calculator January 18, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Just want to say the item was a gift for my daughter, she is getting ready for college. She is going for grafics designer. She had to borrow her teachers for her math and when she got this one, was very excited. Her teacher had the TI-83 and was very impressed she had a more advanced one then him. It's a great calc with many features. Also the best price I could find.
Horrible calculator, the designers should be ashamed! January 12, 2008 3 out of 34 found this review helpful
I took this calculator to a comprehensive algebra, geometry, trig, statistics, and calculus test. The calculator has been programmed to make very common tasks very hard to do in a speedy method. For example, when you try to calculate the cosine of an angle, you must press "second function" then "cosine." There isn't a fast dedicated cosine button. Next, somehow during the test a menu function changed. When I type "cos (20)," the calculator spits back "cos(20)", which isn't helpful! I know, I know, you're thinking my mode settings are in radians instead of degrees, but that's not the case. Despite consulting the 312 page manual, I still don't know how to make the calculator find the cosine of 20 degrees! Even worse, during my test the calculator couldn't divide 5/32 for me! It spit back "5/32", which also wasn't helpful. Again, there isn't a simple menu change that appears to correct the situation. I ended up doing long division BY HAND on the test! The calculator also tries to take you to the "home" screen, which is also a waste of time unless you want to have the option of setting the clock several times during the day. Once you are "demoted" to the "home" screen, you then have to click on the picture of the calculator to go back to a screen that allows you to do calculations! When designing this machine, the engineers should have kept the most common buttons (trig and mode settings) simple, convenient, and fast to access. I should have brought my old TI-81 to the test!!!
