LapTop Still OverHeats February 3, 2010 Tammy Jo Martindale I have it on high but my laptop still shuts down so I have to turn a regular fan on it as well.
Quiet, effective, bulky February 2, 2010 Jennifer Presley (Chicago, IL United States) I got this cooling pad during college after Best Buy confirmed that my HP laptop's hard drive had literally melted. The pad made my computer go from that to cool to the touch--with the PC's high-powered fan speed never being triggered. It's quiet--can't hear the low setting over my computer, and the high setting is quiet too. I like that it has 2 fans, and that it blows away on two sides--so if one side is blocked, it's not a big deal. It is pretty bulky--an inch thick--to bring to school in my backpack along with books and laptop. I'm currently, after having this 7 years, looking for a portable one, but this one's left me with high expectations!
USB Power Cord Shorted Out, Noisy, Light Distracting February 1, 2010 Karl Burrows (Charlotte, NC) I purchased 2 of these. One for our DirecTV DVR, which got so hot in a cabinet, it melted the veener off the shelf. The other was for for my laptop. The unit for the DVR is working fine, however, it is noticibly noisy. You can hear the fan even over the hard drive in the DVR unit. Also, when it is dark in the room, you can see the blue glow of the LED.
On the laptop unit, it remains in a fixed location on a credenza. Again, the fan is noisy enough, you have to turn up the TV or music to hear and the blue light is distracting as it shines out into the room. In addition after owning this unit for about 9 months, the USB power cable has become frayed at the connector and now the unit no longer works. I'm not sure how it would take heavy use if this unit is already dead after 9 months with very light use.
Overall, I would not purchase these notebook coolers again. It is probably worth a few extra dollars to get a version with a quieter fan and the ability to turn the LED light off. The units have not lived up to my expectations for an Antec product. I have purchase PC cases, power supplies and other Antec accessories and have been very pleased, but these do not.
Didn't last very long January 31, 2010 Vishwanath Chidambaram (Westford, MA USA) This unit stopped working within 4 months of purchase. While I had it, it was cooling my Dell Latitude D620 laptop fairly well. Then one day it just stopped working. I thought maybe the problem was with the USB cord, and sure enough it was. When I held the cord in a "certain way", on the cooler end, the fans would start up. Occasionally it even stayed on after I let go of the cord, and was very careful not to joggle the cord. Needless to say, this was hardly practical in the long run.
I wonder if any of these devices are designed to last very long. It didn't cost much, so I am only somewhat upset. I need to buy another one soon. And keep my fingers crossed that it lasts longer than the previous one.
Excellent laptop cooler! January 31, 2010 Richard W. Haddock Jr. (Tulsa, OK.) I spent a lot of time researching cooling pads and stands for my laptop. Every site I read or looked at continually had this Antec at or near the top. So I decided when I saw how good a price Amazon had on it, that I was going to get it. I have been nothing but pleased about it since I received it. I have had it for over a month now and use it daily, it's so quiet that sometimes I have to check it to make sure it's working. It has kept my laptop nice and cool, I am very happy that I bought it.
