Almost 30 years and still going June 29, 2009 Paul C. Listerman (Edgewood, KY) HP12C. Great machine. I inherited the calculator from my Dad when he passed away 24 years ago. He used it daily as I have for over 20 years in the financial industry. I have used this calculator every day for over 20 years without any problems. I have had to replace the batteries only once that I remember. If it ever dies (likely not), I will immediately replace it with another HP12c.

I have owned and used a 12C for more than 25 years. I just just bought my 3rd 12C and I have to say I am really disappointed in the quality of the product. This product is a cash cow for HP and it seems they are trying to squeeze more margin out of an already high margin product by cutting corners which reduces the quality. Prime example are the keys. In the past the keys were well fitted in the calculator casing to give it a solid feel. Now the keys jiggle within the casing, especially if you hold it upside down and lightly shake it back and forth. I would suggest HP to have a serious discussion with the product manager in charge of the 12C. You have gone from a quality product to a cheap Chinese knock off. Had I known this when I bought it I would have found another alternative.
HP-12C 2009 changes June 22, 2009 Mike Rhodes (Seattle, WA USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I received a new HP-12C from Amazon today and I noticed a couple of differences from my previous (2006) model.
1) It takes two 3V CR 2032 batteries instead of one.
2) It calculates instantly, as opposed to preserving the processing speed of the original (no more "running" flashing on the screen).
3) It does not respond to the self-test documented in the manual.
I called HP support and they informed me that this revision of the classic 12C started appearing on the market about 6 months ago. The self-tests are accessed by holding down [g] + [ENTER], pressing the [ON] button, and then releasing all the buttons. This will present you with a menu that looks like this:
1.L 2.C 3.H
Pressing [1] performed the standard circuitry test, [2] gives you a checksum, and [3] performs the keyboard test.
It's still the same reliable calculator as far as I can tell, but - and this is probably a good thing - it loses some of its vintage appeal with the faster processor. This took some getting used to for me. There was something interesting and unusual about watching the calculator "think," and it was a little bit of a shock to see it spit out the answers so quickly. I won't be able to amuse my friends anymore by making it crunch on an amortization for 2 minutes, but, almost 30 years after it was originally introduced, I guess that's progress.
Excellent May 31, 2009 Robert M. Argo 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The item was in excellent condition and the shipping was timely and well packaged.
I have used such a calculator before and this one replaces one I have used for over 20 years. I expect this new one to be of comparable quality.
HP 12c Financial Calculator May 29, 2009 S. Jane Anderson (Seattle WA USA) This calculator is my second one. I found the first to be so great, easy to use and a "must have", with me, I now have one on my desk in my office and the other in my briefcase.
Thank you,
