From a Fantasy/Thriller Reader Perspective December 31, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
So I normally read epic fantasy, horror, thrillers, and other various "high tension" fiction. I love SK, G.R.R. Martin, C. McCarthy, Rothfuss, and a lot of others.
That being said, Pillars is at once something I am interested in (period piece), and something I'm not sure about (historical fiction).
I loved it. Every page. Actually, every word. I listened to the audio version. Can't wait for the sequel.
Great characters, depth and breadth of story, plotlines, everything.
In a word....epic. Some characters you love, some you loathe. Some live, some die. The building continues, halts, falters, continues.
Love, lies, betrayal, faithfulness, envy, greed, malice, charity, good will, and many others. It's all there.
Easy to read, if long. Very engaging. Worth the cost.
Splendid Storytelling December 31, 2008 This is my first Follett and I was impressed with his imaginative plotting, tight pacing, historical fidelity and crisp characterizations of good and evil. He succeeds in bringing you into that world 800 years ago where profound insecurity ruled--for food, shelter, a job. With murderous highwaymen, nonexistent policing, and corrupt clergy and royalty. Justice denied in a brutal society.
But after the first 500 pages, this once sure-fire five star historical novel started to disappoint in failing to neatly wrap up the story. The second 500 pages should have been edited to 250--instead of a classic just a four star very enjoyable read.
One of the best I have ever read! December 30, 2008 One of the best books I have ever read. Wonderfully written, and the story is such that it keeps you constantly engaged with twists and turns throughout. I cant wait to read the follow up to this book.
Interesting Historical Fiction of Englands early Church December 26, 2008 I found this book very enlightening in the area of church politics. (Sort of reminds me of the church today.) The story is centered around Kingsbridge Priory. The tale begins with a mysterious hanging that will affect the participants greatly in the years to come. The main characters become interwoven in each others lives in amazing ways. You will be curious as to how it all ends. I am looking forward to reading the sequel. The sexual scences are crude and do not add to the story, hence the 4 star rating. The profane way that they are written is not necessary. The descriptions could have been less profane and described in more acceptable way keeping with what the writer is trying to say.
Enjoyable Reading December 24, 2008 I really got attached to the characters in this novel. Mr. Follet for the most part knows his stuff and can tell a good story. I appreciate him getting me into historical novels and because of him I found the author Sharon Kay Penman. I believe she is a notch or two above him in both story writing and historical accuracy. Good read though.
