5 out of 5 stars Top of the Line BIA Monitor   May 3, 2009

I'm very happy with this purchase.

Tanita is a quality company as well. I've spoken with their customer service and it's top notch.

The documentation which comes with the monitor is also thorough and includes many languages for use throughout the world.

I've had my scale now for about 4 years. I've never had any problems with it.

Some bad news. If you're waiting for the price to come down, as it does with most tech products over time, don't hold your breath. I paid about the same price 4 years ago as it's going for today.

Since this is the best on the market for home use, the price probably isn't coming down anytime soon.

This scale is an awesome tool to track your body fat% and body water% which operate conversely. Raise your body water and lose body fat (and vice-versa).

So if you want to lose weight, drink more water!

Also, since it's possible to have a low body fat% but still have high levels of visceral fat, (which you can't see inside your abdomen), this scale will keep track of that as well.

That's important since visceral fat is an indicator for lots of chronic problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc.

And the DCI (Daily Caloric Intake) and Metabolic Age functions are fascinating to say the least.

All in all, this isn't just a scale. It's a fascinating tool you can use to help you achieve health and wellness and then maintain it.

*Highest recommendation. http://www.ultimate-health-coach.blogspot.com

5 out of 5 stars I bought it because of good reviews - can now confirm them   February 16, 2009

I read the Amazon reviews for this product and I'm now able to confirm them. This scale is fantastic, though, honestly, if you are struggling with your weight, the numbers it will give you will not flatter your self-esteem. But that's the whole point, no?

I have 20 lbs of unnecessary weight and I weigh myself every morning. I noticed that weekly or bi-weekly or monthly weigh-ins were just a way for me to deceive myself - I thought I was doing well and made progress, but it turns out I was staying at the same weight. SO I bought this scale in order to track what is really happening with my body day in and day out, so I know what my "normal" baseline is. The readings are very accurate and they provide me the motivation i need to stay with the program. Watching the body fat percentage drop is particularly satisfying. I am on the upper end of "healthy" and "normal", and I want to be more in the middle. This scale allows you to track that extremely accurately.

The other fun and scary thing about it is the "metabolic age" reading. I am 30 but came out as 40 at first. Wow. After a month of going to the gym, I am now "32". Let's hope soon enough I'll be my actual age or younger. If this sounds gimmicky to you, don't worry, I don't take this too seriously. The number is silly, of course, but it does remind you that your weight and your fat/muscle ratio are not what they should be for your age/gender/frame.

4 out of 5 stars Works as advertised, but questionable durability   January 3, 2009

If you're looking to purchase the Tanita BC533 Glass Innerscan Body Composition Monitor you're probably someone who takes fitness seriously, or you're trying to make an effort to take it seriously. My wife and I purchased this scale 3 years ago to help us with our New Year's resolutions - that should tell you which group we fit into. :)

By now, you've probably read all the specs, so I won't tell you what you already know. But it is important to know how well it works. Shortly after making the purchase I went to a local facility and had hydrostatic body fat testing. The results were very close to what the Tanita had indicated - within 1%. This was perfect confirmation that the scale was well worth the high price tag.

*** TIP *** At times the Tanita would give us inconsistent results. After some time and deduction my wife and I concluded that it was much more accurate just after getting out of the shower. As if the moisture in our feet somehow facilitated the measurement. I don't purport to have any scientific evidence to support this, but I can tell you, without question, it was far more accurate that stepping on with dry feet.

The only downside, albeit a HUGE one, was the durability of the unit. About a year after we purchased it, it became very unstable. It would only power on half of the time. We'd replace the batteries and it still would not work. Eventually I noticed that the battery contacts were rusting. A little cleaning worked temporarily, but after time they completely corroded, rendering the scale lifeless. For the price, I would expect that this scale would have better protection against the moisture that is common in any household bathroom.

CONCLUSION: Buy the scale, but don't keep it in the bathroom.

3 out of 5 stars Starts out Good   December 15, 2008

This product appeared to be a solid, after a year of use the scale never changes my body fat. I work out daily, step class, spinning class, kettle bell classes, my Tanita BC533 Glass Innerscan Body Composition Monitor read "never changes remains 35%,not accurate,I have had myself evalated at a gym because this scale is not on target after so many uses.
I would skip this item and spend the $5.00 at a gym for an accurate read.
For an active person who is 150 pounds and 5'8 , no way the scale should indicate 35% body fat.

This was the best item I have purchased. This scale helped people to understand the status of their health. Great tool to have in the family.
