Excellent resource August 22, 2002 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Easy to read but very thorough. Doesn't just tell you how to use the menus, but walks you through the entire statistical process. Spends a lot of time teaching you how to check your statistical assumptions, which is so important. Book has been invaluable to me, both for using SPSS and for improving my statistical skills. Sections on GLM techniques and regression are particularly good.
Discovering Statistics using SPSS for Windows November 25, 2001 Denis, (Louisville, Ky. USA) 17 out of 19 found this review helpful
One of the things I admire about people is their ability to recognize others who share similar interests and talents and to give credit where credit is due. In the preface to his book Andy Field cites other authors who have written books about SPSS and stastical theory. I have bought those books and they are well worth the price. This book is an excellent introduction to both SPSS and statistics. The book is written with a light, humorous style. It has a lot of examples of statistical analysis. It is obvious that the author has an excellent grasp of SPSS and statistics. It contains a very useful bibliography on statistics and SPSS. There is also a CD ROM included. The book is very well organized and has high quality screen prints of SPSS windows and dialogue boxes. It is one of the best software manuals I have ever purchased. It is well worth the price. If you don't purchase any other book on SPSS, purchase this one
A Really Helpful Study July 20, 2001 Mehmet Yusuf YAHYAGIL (Istanbul, Turkey) 25 out of 25 found this review helpful
A.Field's "Discovering Statistics" (using SPSS for Windows)is a must book for not only undergraduate and graduate students but also for the instructors like myself. The language of the book is stimulating the redaer, and Mr.Field's way of explanation is both a creative one and has the sense of humor which makes the book more readable. Its content is well-designed and the reader is able to follow up what each type of analysis is all about, and more importantly how the outcome shoul be interpreted. Although first chapters are written as a refreshment of statistical knowledge, I would like to suggest to the reader to have a primary knowledge about both the basics of research methodology and statistical methods as well as statistical techniques to use them in accordance with the research problem(s).I would also like to point out the fact that some critical issues like "the meaning of standart error" is explained in an efficient way in comparison to that of ordinary statistics textbooks. In short, the book is, indeed, a very helpful one for anybody who wants to use SPSS for this or another reason.
A refreshing book in statistics and spss July 5, 2001 Marcel (Taichung, Taiwan) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
The author uses a different approach to explain statistics and spss. If you have already read some conventional statistics books and are still confused about what all the numbers really mean (or even you think you understand them very well), you should buy and read this book. Also, the materials about spss are perfectly integrated into the process of teaching statistics. Highly recommend.
