Snapshot of the best on the web September 3, 2009 Diane Cipollo (Editor at BellaOnline.com) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Web design is a fairly new area in art and design and, due to the ever-changing nature of the web, it is still evolving into a recognizable art form. As it matures, we begin to see design patterns emerge and these common patterns can be loosely grouped into design styles based on a common design element, theme or purpose.
There are numerous sites on the web that list the "25 best websites" based on one aspect of web design. This book by Patrick McNeil does just that for you in print. It is a snapshot of the best on the web over the last few years. This isn't a book that you read once and place on a shelf. If you are a professional web designer, you will want to browse through the book again and again, each time noticing something new in design or inspiration. If you are just getting interested in web design or branching out in this new area, this is the book that will bring you up to date as to what is popular today.
McNeil has carefully chosen and grouped 700+ sample sites into major categories by type, purpose, style, theme, color, design element or structure. You will surely recognize some of these sites as your personal favorites. He also discusses each category pointing out what makes these sites among the best in each category. As you can imagine, taking a snapshot of a website which is created at 72 dpi and printing that image at 300 dpi results in a small thumbnail image of the site in print. Although I found myself wishing otherwise, by necessity this could not be a large "picture book". However, even at this smaller size, these special sites still stand out as the best. As an alternative, you will want to use this book as a guide to visit these sites in full size on the web.
Patrick McNeal is a freelance web developer. His runs a design showcase website [...] where he maintains a large, ongoing collection of websites along with tutorials and articles.
Up-to-date design ideas - finally! August 24, 2009 Cooperative Designer (North Dakota) This book is full of designs that cover all aspects from Contemporary to traditional to rustic. It's a very good resource for the designer who is looking for a direction that takes them a bit outside of the box. The illustrations are bright and it is easy to find the actual website from which the shots are taken.
Great Design Ideas August 20, 2009 Michael S. Fowler (Albuquerque, NM USA) I've been looking for web designer's book. There doesn't seem to be many around. Helped me out a lot. Very good.
A must for every web designers June 9, 2009 Remolino D. Torres (Knoxville, TN) Like the title says, this book gives ideas and inspiration for a project that gives you web designer's block. The book gives you color combination and their codes so you don't have to flip through color wheels.
Good Idea, Brilliant Execution, Great Book May 17, 2009 JTN 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Based on the DesignMeltDown.com website, which has been inspiring and focusing web design for years, this book is the perfect resource for any web or graphic designers library.
The book reveals web design trends, and offers advice as to how and why certain aspects of design are incorporated in various ways to gain different results.
The succinct organization makes locating a specific topic a breeze, and once you find your answer, the beautifully rendered pages bring the website to life.
A required resource for web designers, I'm looking forward to many more editions from Mr. McNeil.
