Common Sense - a good name when Tom Paine used it; a good name when used by Mr Beck. And a good name when Mr Chesterton professed it...uncommon though it may be. The herd, or the hive, is quite devoid of the commodity. Mr Paine was not; Mr Chesterton was not; Mr Beck is not. Read it. All of it. Twice.

This is a great, short book. And, I've actually read it. Funny how obvious it is that those 1-star ratings are mostly from people who have not even read the book. Anyway, the book is a very fast read. It is not particularly scholarly, but I don't believe it was meant to be. Beck is merely explaining his point of view on the subject matter - common sense. I enjoyed his examples of where common sense is strikingly missing. Watching the news for any length of time will even demonstrate how common sense is lacking in many government institutions - for example, how Pres Obama is telling every drug dealer around that medical marijuana cases will not be prosecuted, kind of like taking a neighborhood and saying the police will not be patrolling because of a meeting (some things are better left unsaid). Whether or not you agree with Pres's stand, he did show a lack of common sense in announcing it to the world.

The first part of the book that Glenn wrote was great, as are all of his other books. The second part that is the Thomas Paine part reads really slowly though.

Common Sense: The Case Against Out of Control Government, Glenn Beck
3 Stars.
Glenn Beck is one of the conservative media men that I really enjoy listening too. His book had some good tidbits, but overall I found that it seemed hastily written and lacking in substance. The way Beck has been pumping books out lately, this was likely shadow written speedily and rushed to the printing press. My main objection to this text is how "pop culture" it was written stylistically, and prone to provincialism it was; normally that is not relevant criticism for a pop culture guy like Glenn Beck, but since it was inspired by Thomas Paine, it was set up with anticipation of being much more of a "timeless" masterpiece that is enduring. Unfortunately, is was so chalk full of pop media and current event references that even most Americans will have no idea what he was drawing a comparison to or talking about if they read this book two years from now. It is much more a political pamphlet than an interesting book. I enjoyed reading it once, and it was more so only worth the purchase to read the Thomas Paine material in the back. Thomas Paine's argument against a Monarchy/ruling king was excellent and intellectual. Though since it was firmly rooted in theology with deep canonical references, I know I would not have been able to make much sense of it were I not a religious and biblical studies minor when it came to the Davidic monarchy and kingship. Beck would have done well to include some commentary, footnotes, or an introduction to set the stage for this and how it relates to contemporary time. It was written to be accessible to many, but was actually accessible and relevant probably for few. I like Beck, and the text helped me collect some thoughts of my own. I had high expectations which were ultimately let down. I give him the benefit of the doubt and hope that he does better in the future. 3 stars is generous... without Paine as an appendix, I would give it 1 or 2 stars.

Glenn Beck's common sense is a book that should be read by everyone that feels the United States is going down a path of destruction.
