5 out of 5 stars Great Characters   February 25, 2010

I loved how she developed her characters; especially Olive. I also enjoyed the small town setting she created which felt very real. I highly recommend it for pleasure reading or a book club.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible...skip it!   February 24, 2010

Having slogged through this book (with increasing dread) I would not ask anyone to do the same. It is poorly constructed, disjointed and downright depressing with no benefit whatsoever. Characters are barely even developed and have no redeeming value at all. Can't even give it one star.

In my life I have known many strong women from the great state of Maine but this story does not reflect any positive characterization in comparison. Moreover, the editor really failed the author on this book. It could have been much better than mundane. What a waste of time and talent! This author is off my list.

5 out of 5 stars Better than a lobster roll   February 24, 2010
D. N. Stone (Stamford, CT United States)
These are stories that are as necessary and humble as a well-worn pair of LL Bean duck boots, even if Olive herself is as ungainly as those webbed, rubbery winter basics. This book reminded me that being single is not the only kind of lonely in the world, and it is the married couples here who most need someone to talk to. And from Olive we learn that solace can be found in the most unlikely of places, even in the smile of the person who sells you your Dunkin' munchkins in the morning. It is hard to choose a favorite among these linked stories, but the ones that deal with Olive's relationship with her son (and daughters-in-law) made me squirm the most for dear, misunderstood Olive. For those who leave this book thinking that Olive is an awful person, I ask them to read again the story about the girl with anorexia. The Stern Librarian (The library is my Vacationland).

Olive is a miserable person. Enough said? This book has dozens of characters that never come together. In every chapter there are new people introduced and the author never returns to them except Olive, her husband and her son. These characters appear every other chapter. How on earth did this dribble get published?
