Great, with a few provisos... June 21, 2007 Ryan McNabb (Ooltewah, TN USA) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
I valued this book, and read it cover to cover. But you should know this: it is sloppily edited, with many typos (some confusing). It's great value, and the way I used it, is that it is an "expanded" NCCPA blueprint. Everything on the blueprint is in this book and in the same (alphabetical) order. Having subjects in alphabetical order seems bizarre at first, but what this book does is take you through every single subject on the NCCPA blueprint, note for note. IT IS NOT ENOUGH BY ITSELF. You should have "Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment" and your other texts handy to really learn from, but it's very good, and for the less commonly encountered conditions, is probably all you will ever need to know. The major conditions will require significant additional study from other sources.
The in-chapter questions are a joke, as is the web based practice test. They aren't challenging enough to be of any learning value.
PA Board Review March 8, 2007 H. Nussbaum 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book is outdated and inaccurate. In addition, the chapters are not well organized. In addition there are several typos and errors which cause contradictions within the book. This book is ok to use to refresh your memory, as long as you know your stuff well enough to spot the mistakes.
book ok, lots of misprints! February 5, 2007 Peds Pa 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book I used as a second review book in conjunction with the AAPA book. The outline was very good, most of the info was comparible to the aapa book with more detail. My only critisism is there were quite a few misprint in the answers to the questions. He also labels Cranial Nerve 5 as the Abducens and SIx as the trigeminal! If he can't get the basics right I was a little worried about the rest of the book!
very good review book December 27, 2006 HB (NJ) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I found this book to be an excellent tool in my preparation for the PANRE. I would have given it 5 stars but I felt that it should have included more review questions and more illustrations. The information content was up-to-date and not overly "wordy" and the outline form made it easy to read. Since I work in Orthopedics and the PANRE is primary care based, I supplemented this book with Appleton and Lange's Review Questions, Current's Medical Diagnosis and Treatment, and a pathophysiology reveiw book and I passed my PANRE.
Excellent review tool November 6, 2006 Scott Klimp (Fort Bragg, NC USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The text served as an excellent general review on the core subject matter for the PANRE. The topics followed the NCCPA blueprint very closely. I found the online test questions to be very helpful. The online test mode was a good tool to prepare for the actual exam. Suffice to say that after using this as my primary review tool I scored very well on the PANRE. I would recommend this to other PA's without hesitation.
