3 out of 5 stars Good reference to Brain understanding and usage   July 30, 2009

This book describes the actual Brain scientific understanding stage giving its contemporaneous evolution. It is clear how far is the scientific community from the total Brain explanation and comprehension. On the other hand, the clues given in the Book are consistent and worthy to have a better live towards a healthy Brain

3 out of 5 stars Good info, but now what?   July 26, 2009

If you are interested in a better understanding of how the brain works, you came to the right place. Through examples and simple explanations, the author explains the functions of the brain.

I was hoping for for some useful ideas on how to leverage this information. Although there were a few good ideas, most of them were aimed at how scientists or the educational system should change. There isn't much most people can do with that.

2 out of 5 stars Tough Going In the Beginning   July 15, 2009

I very much enjoyed the book but at times, particularly the first quarter of the book, it was tough going. Tough in a sense that the author found it necessary to present very detailed explanations of the "mechanics" of the brain, I am sure in an attempt to "help" the reader put the remainder of information in context. That being said the remaining portion was quite interesting. I gave it a 2 because I was very tempted to bail out several times in the start but hung in there for the remaining text.

3 out of 5 stars Not much of it is actually applicable   July 13, 2009

This book does not fulfill its promise to help you "survive and thrive at work, home and school." It is, however, an interesting distillation of some of the latest and most interesting brain research.

Basically the advice in this book is get enough sleep, exercise, don't be boring if you want people to pay attention, and repetition is key to memorization. That all seems like common sense to me.

The rest of the book is interesting but not really applicable to everyday life.

For example, rule #3 is "every brain is wired differently" and rule #11 is "male and female brains are different." There's a lot of interesting information about those two facts but very little about how to apply that those "rules" to your life.

My guess is that the author wanted to write a book about the human mind and his publisher said, OK, but only if you write it in the form of a self help book.

5 out of 5 stars Improve your productivity with Brain Rules   July 7, 2009

In Brain Rules, Medina considers how exercise, survival, memory, sleep, stress, vision, sensory integration, gender, attention, wiring, and exploration are related to our brains. He really gets it about how people learn. The DVD and website that accompany the book and were developed to be used in conjunction with Brain Rules offer many opportunities for learning reinforcement and they are entertaining.
