I can't keep this book to myself. April 10, 2009 Rebeccah F. Chau (HaNoi, VietNam) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I love all MaryAnn Kohl's books. As a mom of two preschools these books have given us so many fun art activities, recipes, lessons and experiences together. My main problem with the books are trying to get them back from friends who constantly borrow them. I live overseas and getting your hands on 'gold' like this is rare. I literally have had to hunt down my books so I can use them with my own kids. Many of my friends are elementary and preschool teachers and love the simple materials and low prep time required for the projects. My daughter's preschool uses MaryAnn's books as a part of their curriculum. In fact, many of the international schools I've worked at house her books in their teacher resource room. But speaking as a mom, these are the best books for fun bonding activities with my own kids.
Creativity can be Black and White! March 26, 2009 Marianne Dambra (Rochester, NY USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am disappointed to see people concerned about the inside color of a book! Obviously you haven't seen other books by other early childhood experts such as Bev Bos, Mary Baratta-Lorton, and all of my High/Scope publications... all are in black and white as well.
As an early childhood educator for 23 years I have found the ideas that Mary Ann Kohl has provided to those in our field excellent. Isn't it the process that counts? What about the learning that takes place through the experiments, art ideas, and discoveries through play? If it isn't, then I am teaching future professionals something wrong!
Make use of the book for its purpose, not its color.
I highly recommend Mary Ann Kohl's books! I'd be happy to share my experiences with young children using the excellent information I have gleaned over the years through Mary Ann's books.
Thank you Mary Ann.. keep up the great ideas!
VERY helpful tool March 25, 2009 Courtney A. Price (Lynden, WA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I used this in homeschooling and also just to have ideas of things to do with kids on a rainy day. Plus, I like that it actually teaches along with the ideas.
Sure, color would be great... but I also know publishing and that would be very expensive! Especially for a learning tool. You just have to be realistic about these things!
Fantastic! Fantastic! Fantastic! March 21, 2009 L. Zappia (Victoria, Australia) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book is brilliant for any teacher who is looking for a basic overview of art history and simple, interesting ideas with how to introduce the styles to children. I am a primary art teacher and have often used this book as a reference for beginning ideas, then modifying them to make it my own. Brilliant book!
A place to begin September 23, 2008 Mr. Real (NH) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
We have found this to be a great book for introducing artists to our young one. True, it would be nice if there were more color pictures, but the book has a companion website that shows the paintings in color, and you can find activites there also.
