Good For Its Purpose June 24, 2009 Irfan A. Alvi (Towson, MD USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've studied a good bit of mathematics, to the level of differential equations and beyond, but the problem is that my last math class was two decades ago. I recently concluded that math ability is far too important to let it decay so, on the "use it or lose it" principle, I decided to do a systematic review of the math I learned in my younger years, starting with the very basics.
I chose this particular book to start with, since it covers basic precalculus math at a fairly elementary level (doesn't even cover logarithms). As such, I'm not the typical reader/reviewer for this book, since I'm not preparing for a standardized test.
Pretty much as I expected, I did find the book to be rather elementary, and I was able to go through it fairly quickly. The material was generally familiar to me, though I did pick up a few things which I'd forgotten (or never learned?). I solved many of the practice problems, but not all of them, since they become repetitive after a while and I didn't need much practice to jog my memory. I also just skimmed through the strategy sections at the end of the book, since I was usually able to apply my own strategies (from experience) which are simpler and quicker.
Overall, I think this book has been put together well, so I can recommend it and I can see why it has high Amazon ratings. I imagine that it's a good book for its target audience (those preparing for standardized tests), but I'm not the best person to judge that. For my own purposes, the book was also useful but, again, it was very elementary, so it's only a starting point for self-directed systematic math review.
This helped me relearn things I hadn't done in 15 years April 24, 2009 Little Q's Mom (USA) If you have forgotten arithmetic, algebra and geometry, use this book and then move on to test specific reviews, such as the Kaplan and Princeton Review GRE guides. This book is great. . . very clear with lots of practice questions within each lesson to help solidify what you just learned.
Very Useful to Refresh Your Math Knowledge April 22, 2009 Denis Shelemekh 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I found this book very useful. I forgot a lot of math since my high school and university (~10 years after graduation), and I managed to workout the book during 1 month period, which allows me to get a score 48 (85%) in GMAT.
Dull but effective February 16, 2009 Faux News: Unfair and Biased (Rhode Island) You can't just sit down and read this book, but it does teach you mathematics well, and it is a great resource.
