Good book, marred by irritating interjections. May 4, 2009 Jens Markvean (South Africa) 3 out of 11 found this review helpful
As someone coming from an engineering/software background I thought I might as well get the best book on the molecular biology of the cell. This book delivered in spades where the facts are concerned.
However, it pretty soon got very irritating with interjections SPECULATING on how and when the first living organism started and evolved into the "tree of life". First off, such nonsense doesn't contribute anything useful and secondly, it actually detracts from the facts since it interrupts the flow of thought of what ACTUALLY exists and how it operates.
For someone who needs to know in a hurry what is cooking in the molecular biology of the cell, the evolutionary thoughts are a great hinderance.
It would have been far better to devote an entire chapter solely to discussing the evolutionary ideas AFTER the rest of the book had been presented. This would have enabled a far more better organised viewpoint of what evolution has to say about biology. Instead, the haphazard interjections merely serve to annoy.
Otherwise the book contains facts and figures beyond reproach and is to be highly recommended for that.
Molecular Biology of the Cell March 11, 2009 Vicente D. Villa The book "Molecular Biology of the Cell" by Alberts et al. was a great deal for me, for I was able to acquire a great updated reference book in paperback at a most reasonable price. I was surprised to see that the last five chapters of the book were not on paper but rather on a disc to be downloaded. I had no idea that this would be the case, but I can get around this minor inconvenience. I am planning on purchasing the companion book on "Problems in MBOC". Thank you very much for the great deals you offer on good books in the biological sciences.
Great Cell Biology Textbook! February 18, 2009 scoobysnacks (Honolulu, HI USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Molecular Biology of the Cell is a great textbook, used by top universities, and constantly used by researchers as reference. Great that they have part of the textbook on CD now!
Hate cell biology January 8, 2009 E. Mills 0 out of 8 found this review helpful
This book was very in depth and difficult. Bolded vocab in the chapters were not in the back of the book. It did have good illustrations. Good luck in this course.
THE book for molecular biology January 5, 2009 The Mad Scientist (Iowa) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is, by far, the most well known and most widely used textbook for molecular biology; and there is a reason it is. This text is extremely comprehensive and covers just about every topic you can think of that is related to molecular biology/cytology. Although before you try to conquer this monster I recommend a firm background in biochemistry and/or molecular biology from a smaller book, as this book is very dense with facts and information and can be hard to comprehend if you aren't somewhat familiar with the material beforehand. My only real complaint about the book is that it is very heavy and the binding isn't that great after you use the book a lot. There are a lot of great figures and tables in the book which makes learning the material that much easier. If you are serious about molecular biology you can't get far without this book, definitely recommend you have a copy on your bookshelf!
