A Wonderful Gem by A Splendid Author November 3, 2009 Agnes Grey 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
It was by sheer accident that I stumbled across "Olive Kitteridge" and the author Elizabeth Strout. Her short stories are so exquisite that I have re-read Starving, Tulips and Security before finishing the book which I am reluctant to do as each one is priceless, and I am hoping one day that the author plans to provide us with more such realistic and pragmatic tales. Ms. Strout remains consistent, and there is not an anecdote in her intertwined thirteen stories that disappoint. They are ironic, at times both funny and sad, and always provide food for thought. At a certain age, one can relate to the above and there is not a false note to be found in this brilliant book of short stories. Congratulations to Ms. Strout.
Good service November 2, 2009 joneslinwa (Cle Elum, WA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The service was terrific and the books arrived in just a few days. I belong to a Book Club so I ordered the books for a couple of the members and was glad to get them so soon.
Thanks.
well written but depressing short stories November 2, 2009 Holm (Ann Arbor, MI) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I normally read for entertainment or education and the best books combine the two. This book fits neither category. The short stories are well written and the characters are interwoven, but I was left with the feeling that I had just wasted my time and money and would have derived as much entertainment from watching the nightly news (not happy stuff). It was hard to continue reading but I kept thinking that somewhere there had to be a HAPPY story....not so much.
Evocative November 1, 2009 S. Woodall (New Haven, CT) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
A series of short stories taking place in the same small town in Maine and linked by one or more characters from that town, the end result is evocative of Maine itself.
Olive Kitteridge is the link and the prism through which the stories are told. She is a crusty mature woman and quite unique. She is Maine as a personal metaphor.
The author's descriptions of the landscape evoke images of Maine as abstract expressionism.
The book lends itself to lots of contemplation and interpretation.
Did not enjoy this "TYPE" of writing style November 1, 2009 N. N Perez (Las Vegas, Nv United States) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I did not enjoy this book. It had nothing to do with the authors writing and everything to do with the "style" of writing. What I mean by this is that I did not enjoy the short story style with no ending in sight. The stories needed to be much more interesting and in my opinion they all fell flat. I never felt any connection to any of the characters due to the fact we did not spend any quality time with anyone in any of the stories. I would not recommend this book. This is my opinion and I understand that you may not agree but I have to be honest.
